Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Religion: Which of the twelve disciples famously betrayed Jesus Christ with a kiss?

Answer: Judas Iscariot

Jesus predicted at the Last Supper that one of his disciples would betray him. Sure enough, Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus to the Romans by kissing him, giving the soldiers their cue to arrest him. According to Matthew, Judas betrayed Jesus for 'thirty pieces of silver' (Matt 26:14-16).
2. Music: Tori Amos was inspired to write 'Cornflake Girl', a song about women's betrayal at the hands of other women. This was after reading a novel by Alice Walker in which the heroine is circumcised as part of a tribal ritual. What is the name of the book?

Answer: Possessing the Secret of Joy

Tashi, the heroine of the novel, comes from a fictional country in Africa where young girls are ritually circumcised. She undergoes circumcision as a young adult, rather than a child, in order to keep in touch with her roots. Amos considered circumcision of young girls to be an act of betrayal by their mothers, and also stated in an interview in 1994 that it made her consider how mothers had harmed their own daughters in the name of tradition over the years. 3. Literature: In Dante's 'Divine Comedy', the Ninth Circle of Hell is reserved for traitors. Many notorious traitors are trapped down here, including Satan himself. What was the punishment reserved for those unlucky enough to end up in the Ninth Circle?

Answer: Being frozen in ice

Traitors in the Ninth Circle of Hell were trapped in the frozen Lake Cocytus. They either had their entire bodies frozen in ice, or were stuck with their heads or faces above the surface, depending on the type of betrayal. As for the other punishments listed above, corrupt politicians and 'grafters' were immersed in boiling tar in the Malebolge (the Eighth Circle), suicides were turned into thorn bushes in the Seventh Circle, and heretics were trapped in burning tombs in the City of Dis (the Sixth Circle). 4. Television: In the fifth season of the anime version of 'Sailor Moon', Sailors Uranus and Neptune pretended to betray their fellow Sailor Senshi, exchanging their star seeds for magical bracelets, in the hope of defeating Sailor Galaxia. They killed Sailor Pluto and Sailor Saturn by shooting them with the bracelets and removing their star seeds. However, when they turned on Galaxia and attacked her with the bracelets, Galaxia survived their attack. Why?

Answer: Galaxia had no star seed to take

Uranus and Neptune's coup went badly wrong when Sailor Galaxia revealed she had no star seed and thus could not be killed by the bracelets, unlike the other senshi who had died. She then destroyed Uranus and Neptune's bracelets, killing them. The dead Sailor Senshi later returned to life after Sailor Moon healed Galaxia and the star seeds were returned to their owners.
5. Geography: In which English county would you find Traitor's Ford?

Answer: Warwickshire

Traitor's Ford appears in the film 'Three Men and a Little Lady', and can be found in the village of Brailes. The name actually has nothing to do with traitors - it's thought to be a corruption of 'Trader's' Ford' Source: http://www.wetroads.co.uk/warwickshire.htm
6. History: In the United Kingdom, high treason was a crime punishable by death. The original punishment was hanging, drawing and quartering, but was later reduced to a simple hanging. Who was the last person to be hanged for this crime in Britain?

Answer: William Joyce

William Joyce, nicknamed 'Lord Haw-Haw' because of his accent, worked for the Germans during the Second World War as a radio announcer, whose job it was to demoralise Allied troops. Although the last executions for murder in the UK took place in 1964, high treason was still punishable by death until the passing of the Crime & Disorder Act 1998. Haigh, Bentley and Christie were also hanged, but for murder, not treason. Source: http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1998/37/section/36
7. Humanities: After the Greek hero Jason finished his quest to find the Golden Fleece, he travelled to Corinth with Medea, only to betray her by leaving her for Glauce, the king's daughter. Medea got her revenge on Glauce by sending her some cursed gifts. One of them was a golden crown. What was the other gift?

Answer: A dress

Understandably, Medea was not pleased with Jason dumping her after all she had done to help him, and sent Glauce a dress and crown which burned her to death after she put them on. Glauce's father, Creon, was also killed when he tried to help her. Source: http://www.theatrehistory.com/ancient/bates018.html
8. Video Games: In 'Mortal Kombat: Deception', which character's ending shows her betraying Onaga after giving him the Kamidogu, and seizing them for her own ends?

Answer: Tanya

Tanya is, shall we say, not the most reliable character in the series. Earlier, in 'Mortal Kombat 4', she betrayed her homeland, Edenia, by allowing the sorcerer Quan Chi's forces into the realm on the pretext that they were refugees. She joined forces with Onaga, the main villain of 'Mortal Kombat: Deception', and according to her ending, "as the Dragon King was distracted, revelling in his victory, Tanya seized the opportunity to snatch the Kamidogu from him, thereby obtaining god-like power. She destroyed the Dragon King and became Ultimate Overlord of the realms." Source: http://mortalkombat.wikia.com/wiki/Tanya
9. Movies: In 'The Lion King', Simba's treacherous uncle Scar sings about his plans to kill Mufasa, the king of the lions, and take his place. What was the name of the song?

Answer: Be Prepared

Scar later kills Mufasa by making him fall into the middle of a stampede, where he is trampled to death. He later gets his just desserts when his posse of hyenas turn on him and tear him apart. 'Hellfire', incidentally, isn't a song from the movie - it's from 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame'!
10. Food: We're back to Turkish Delight, or 'lokum' as it's known in Turkey, the sweet that caused so much trouble for the Pevensie children in Narnia. The most well-known variety, used in sweets such as Fry's Turkish Delight, is pink. What liquid is used to give the pink Turkish Delight its distinctive flavour?

Answer: rosewater

Lemon and rosewater are the most common flavours, but you can get Turkish Delight in mint, orange, cinnamon, strawberry, and loads of other flavours too. A true turkish delight isn't covered in chocolate either. I hope you enjoyed my quiz!
