Question 1 of 10
1. You arrive at Kaleidoscope, tired but relieved after solving "The Mystery of the Flying Kakapo" for the New Zealand Wildlife Service and giving credit to the firm of "Lestrade, Japp, and Strange: consulting detectives". After knocking on the door, you are let inside by the overweight but genial Inspector M__.

"Good day Inspector, it's been a while."
The Inspector looks you over, thinking..( a waste of my time, it is )." Good day. Yes it has. How are your vegetable marrows coming along?"
" Oh, tres bien Inspector. You have a good memory."
" And your bee keeping?"
" Sadly, I am allergic to the sting. I had to give that up."
" Sorry to hear that. Maybe this case will take your mind off it."
" You are most kind. Kindly fill me in, s 'il vous plait."
" Well, the heavy rains subsided and the postman made his rounds. He found everyone dead in the house."
" The postman is beyond reproach?"
" Yes. He always rings twice."
(You groan at the Inspector's sense of humour.)
" Ah, I see that beautiful rainbow arching over the ocean. Oh, by the way, how many colours are there in the visible spectrum?"
" Uh," he hesitates." I think it's ____."
Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. You question the Inspector further.
" Tell me, is there anyone else that you know of?"
" None, because the cliff is too sheer to climb and there are no muddy footprints outside," he replies.
" Then our killer is one of our victims."
" Where were the bodies found?" you continue.
" In their beds, but there were no signs of struggles whatsoever."
" Maybe they were all poisoned?"
" That's a possibility. At first there were ten, and then there were none."
" Hmm...sounds like the title of a mystery I once read."

Of the 4 choices, the one that's least likely a poison is ____.
Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. " May I see the list of victims, Inspector?"
Handing you the list, he says "I found this pinned to an artist's easel in the courtyard. Can you draw anything from it?"
You take the list, read it, then make some mental notes.

Capt. Hastings Redstone - ex-con.
Mr. Wilfred O'Range - banker.
Sgt. Woody Cochon - policeman.
Mr. Endeavour Green - mortician.
Miss Delilah D'Anube - civil servant.
Col. Indigo Watson - soldier, South Africa.
Miss Violet Christie - school bus driver.
Miss Ke-qi-ri Blanc - communist sympathizer.
Miss Irene Adler-Knight - vineyard owner.
Sister Tanya Claire - Nun at St. Fillol's.

" See a pattern here," you observe.
" No, I don't, what is it?"
" The last three surnames on the list refer to three colours, namely ____."
Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. " Okay Inspector, but... hello, what's this?"
You notice an unopened letter, stamped but no postmark, resting in the 'out' basket by the hallway. Putting on gloves, you carefully open the letter and read the contents (it's a riddle):

Stop by the sea and what do you see?
A Mystery to baffle all, committed by me.
The easel holds the puzzle. The puzzle holds the clue.
When all is revealed, the questions remain few.

Why'd I do it? I must confess.
A desire to seek justice. You'll find the rest.
I chose colours because you see.
It's death by spectrum. The last colour? Me.

What "colour" is mentioned last on the victim list?
Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. " Death by spectrum...does it mean by COLOUR spectrum?" you think out loud.
" Hard to believe that Sister Claire is capable of this. Though, it reminds me of that lady, the one that poisoned a lot of people," recalls the Inspector.
Your ears perk up. " Lady poisoner? Which one are you speaking of?" you inquire.
" I'm speaking of the member of the powerful Renaissance family, the Borgias." he replies.
" Oh," you say, "you mean ___."
Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. " It's obvious," note the Inspector. " Sister Claire did it!"
" You may be right, but somehow, I'm not yet convinced."
" I don't understand," he says, looking rather baffled.
" It's too easy, too, as one would say, obvious. No, there's something we're overlooking. Here, let me see that note again."
You look over the note and frown.
" Tell me, Inspector, why are their professions also listed?"
He hesitates, then says " Hey, you're right. Maybe they're ___."
Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. " Precisement! mon ami Inspector," you reply, jotting down what's becoming clearer, listing the occupations in parentheses in front of of the names.

(Ex-con) Redstone - RED
(Banker) O'Range - ORANGE
(Policeman) Cochon - sounds like "caution" i.e. YELLOW
(Mortician) Green - GREEN
(Civil Servant) D'Anube - (Danube, as in) BLUE
(Soldier) Watson - (first name) INDIGO
(Bus driver) Christie - (first name) VIOLET
(Communist Sympathizer) Blanc - WHITE
(Vineyard owner) Adler-Knight - BLACK
(Nun) Sister Claire - CLEAR
" Hmmm, let's see. Red..orange..yellow..green..blue..indigo..violet..white..black..clear.
R.o.y.g.b.i.v.w.b.c..."

" I'm hungry," says the Inspector, rubbing his tummy. "I'm heading off to "Conan's Sandwich Shop" for some nourishment. Care for some food?"
" I'll have the eggs and chips combo from "Dexter's" please (Sgt. Lewis's favourite food). Oh, by the way, do you know a common slang for a communist?"
" I don't know, maybe a 'Red'?" he says as he leaves.
" Hmm...I wonder." You peruse the list, close your eyes, and begin to use the little grey cells.
Then, taking a pencil, you again list the occupations, re-arranging them as you go...

A half hour later he returns with a bagful of food, the aroma of "Dexter's eggs-and-chips combo" filling the room. You exclaim to him:
" I've got it!"
He looks skeptical, but decides to play along, munching on a cheese sandwich. You eat a chip.
" The first three victims are NOT Redstone, O'Range, and Cochon at all."
" Are you sure?" says he with a quizzical look.
"Yes, the victims were disposed of according to the sequence of colours in the visible spectrum, Inspector...BUT THEY WERE KILLED IN ORDER OF THEIR OCCUPATIONS, NOT THEIR NAMES!"
"What!?" he exclaims incredulously.
"In fact, I'm firmly convinced that the first three victims, in order, are___."

( At this point, dear Reader, care to solve the mystery?)
Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. "Hmm..okay, I'll bite so far. Who comes next?" Says the Inspector, finishing off the sandwich. You have another chip.
"Bear with me, but if my theory holds up, the next three are ___."
Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. " Okay, so far I'm still biting," says the Inspector as he bites down on a second cheese sandwich (!)." Now we're down to four."
You munch on a third chip.
" Okay, here it gets a little tricky, but here goes. The final three victims in order, in my opinion, are ___. '
Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. The Inspector drops his glazed doughnut (!?) as he gazes at you. You nibble on a fourth chip.
"Wait a minute, my dear chap, there's only one name left!"
"Yes, only one name, and if you decide to delve into that person's past, you will find all the evidence you need. Yes, Inspector, the guilty person is ___!"
Hint

" Uh," he hesitates." I think it's ____."

Answer: seven

Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet.

Little do you know that your knowledge of colours will help solve the murders.
2. You question the Inspector further. " Tell me, is there anyone else that you know of?" " None, because the cliff is too sheer to climb and there are no muddy footprints outside," he replies. " Then our killer is one of our victims." " Where were the bodies found?" you continue. " In their beds, but there were no signs of struggles whatsoever." " Maybe they were all poisoned?" " That's a possibility. At first there were ten, and then there were none." " Hmm...sounds like the title of a mystery I once read." Of the 4 choices, the one that's least likely a poison is ____.

Answer: Phensic

Phensic is a brand of aspirin.

Popular forms of cyanide include Hydrogen cyanide (colourless gas), Sodium cyanide, and Potassium cyanide (white solids). All three are characterised by a bitter - almond odour. Hydrogen cyanide is normally inhaled. Sodium and potassium cyanides are usually ingested. Seizures, cardiac arrest, and finally death occur within minutes.

Strychnine is a colourless poison commonly used to kill rodents (common Plague carriers). It can be fatal in humans via absorption, inhalation, or swallowing, with death by complete paralysis within a half to one hour.

Elemental arsenic and some of its compounds are especially lethal to humans, slowly causing headaches, stomach cramps, vomiting and delirium resulting in multiple organs failure and finally death. Not only does it occur naturally in the earth (sometimes contaminating ground water), but is used to preserve commercial wood products from rotting and fungus.

All three are popular poisons in murder mystery fiction.
3. " May I see the list of victims, Inspector?" Handing you the list, he says "I found this pinned to an artist's easel in the courtyard. Can you draw anything from it?" You take the list, read it, then make some mental notes. Capt. Hastings Redstone - ex-con. Mr. Wilfred O'Range - banker. Sgt. Woody Cochon - policeman. Mr. Endeavour Green - mortician. Miss Delilah D'Anube - civil servant. Col. Indigo Watson - soldier, South Africa. Miss Violet Christie - school bus driver. Miss Ke-qi-ri Blanc - communist sympathizer. Miss Irene Adler-Knight - vineyard owner. Sister Tanya Claire - Nun at St. Fillol's. " See a pattern here," you observe. " No, I don't, what is it?" " The last three surnames on the list refer to three colours, namely ____."

Answer: White, Black, and Transparent

" Oh, now I understand!" exclaimed the Inspector. " Blanc is French meaning white, Adler-Knight sounds like night (denoting black) and Claire means clear or transparent."
4. " Okay Inspector, but... hello, what's this?" You notice an unopened letter, stamped but no postmark, resting in the 'out' basket by the hallway. Putting on gloves, you carefully open the letter and read the contents (it's a riddle): Stop by the sea and what do you see? A Mystery to baffle all, committed by me. The easel holds the puzzle. It's death by spectrum. The last colour? Me. What "colour" is mentioned last on the victim list?

Answer: Clear

Clear, as in Sister Tanya 'Claire.'
" We've got our murderer!" exclaim the Inspector. " It's Sister Claire all along, although I'm not sure as to her motive."
" Well, maybe certain people were unrepentant for past crimes and she felt compelled to punish them."

Answer: Lucrezia

Possibly no other family was quite as synonymous with political intrigue and murder in Italy as the Borgias. Poisonings, stabbings, stranglings, adultery, and incest were terms commonly associated with the family down through history.
Lucrezia Borgia (April 14, 1480 - June 24, 1519) lived at a time when power and influence was everything. It was rumoured that she kept poison in a hollowed-out ring on her finger in order to "dispatch" anyone she deemed undesirable. Quite possibly, she was nothing more than a pawn in the intrigue of the times, with arranged marriages and political partnerships shaping the power landscape.
Lucrezia Borgia died 10 days after giving birth to her eighth child. Her alleged notoriety, popularized in operas and plays, have never been proven to be more than historical legend.
6. " It's obvious," note the Inspector. " Sister Claire did it!" " You may be right, but somehow, I'm not yet convinced." " I don't understand," he says, looking rather baffled. " It's too easy, too, as one would say, obvious. No, there's something we're overlooking. Here, let me see that note again." You look over the note and frown. " Tell me, Inspector, why are their professions also listed?" He hesitates, then says " Hey, you're right. Maybe they're ___."

Answer: To stimulate the "grey" matter and solve the mystery

So far, all is not clear to you. There's more to this mystery, you can feel it. You feel the need to scan the list once more.
7. " Precisement! mon ami Inspector," you reply, jotting down what's becoming clearer, listing the occupations in parentheses in front of of the names. (Ex-con) Redstone - RED (Banker) O'Range - ORANGE (Policeman) Cochon - sounds like "caution" i.e. YELLOW (Mortician) Green - GREEN (Civil Servant) D'Anube - (Danube, as in) BLUE (Soldier) Watson - (first name) INDIGO (Bus driver) Christie - (first name) VIOLET (Communist Sympathizer) Blanc - WHITE (Vineyard owner) Adler-Knight - BLACK (Nun) Sister Claire - CLEAR " Hmmm, let's see. You peruse the list, close your eyes, and begin to use the little grey cells. Then, taking a pencil, you again list the occupations, re-arranging them as you go... A half hour later he returns with a bagful of food, the aroma of "Dexter's eggs-and-chips combo" filling the room. You exclaim to him: " I've got it!" "What!?" he exclaims incredulously. "In fact, I'm firmly convinced that the first three victims, in order, are___." ( At this point, dear Reader, care to solve the mystery?)

Answer: Blanc, Watson, Christie.

Now, the Inspector is very skeptical as he sips his hot coffee.
" And, pray tell, how did you arrive at this conclusion?"
With relish (!) you continue:
" Miss Ke-qi-ri Blanc was an outspoken Communist sympathizer i.e. a RED."
" Col. Indigo Watson was an ex-soldier of the Orange Free State of South Africa, hence ORANGE."
" Miss Violet Christie drove a school bus, a YELLOW school bus."

Red, orange, yellow...the first three colours in the visible spectrum.
8. "Hmm..okay, I'll bite so far. Who comes next?" Says the Inspector, finishing off the sandwich. You have another chip. "Bear with me, but if my theory holds up, the next three are ___."

Answer: O'Range, Cochon, and Redstone

" And your reasoning is?" says he.
" Well, see if this makes any sense :
" Mr. Wilfred O'Range was a banker i.e. he was always surrounded by GREEN."
" Sgt. Woody Cochon was a policeman, one of the boys in BLUE."
" Capt. Hastings Redstone, an unemployable ex-con, would be what I'd term an indigent, hence INDIGO. I know it's a stretch."

(Boy, is it ever a stretch.)

Green, blue, indigo...the next three colours in the spectrum.
9. " Okay, so far I'm still biting," says the Inspector as he bites down on a second cheese sandwich (!)." Now we're down to four." You munch on a third chip. " Okay, here it gets a little tricky, but here goes. The final three victims in order, in my opinion, are ___. '

Answer: Adler-Knight, Claire, and Green

" I'm still skeptical but please keep talking," says the Inspector drinking his second cup of coffee.
" Miss Irene Adler-Knight was a 'grape' vineyard owner. Purple grapes, purple, hence VIOLET, close enough for me."
" Sister Tanya Claire was from a vocation indicative of purity, or WHITE."
" Mr. Endeavour Green's profession was associated with BLACK, as in mourning, in Western cultures."

Violet... the last colour in the spectrum.
White and Black follow.
10. The Inspector drops his glazed doughnut (!?) as he gazes at you. You nibble on a fourth chip. "Wait a minute, my dear chap, there's only one name left!" "Yes, only one name, and if you decide to delve into that person's past, you will find all the evidence you need. Yes, Inspector, the guilty person is ___!"

Answer: Delilah D'Anube!

"Of course, now it makes sense. Delilah D'Anube, listed as a civil servant, is the most opaque, least TRANSPARENT of them all. For all we know, she could have been a court stenographer or a judge bent on justice. All the others at least give some indication as to their occupation."
"Elementary, my dear Wat___, I mean Inspector."
"Thanks to you the mystery is solved," replies the Inspector. "May I take credit for this?" he asks.
"Why, certainly, mon ami," you reply. "Always glad to be of any assistance to the Yard."
(Whereupon you settle down to have your eggs and chips, which is probably cold by now...ugh.)

"Uh, Inspector, did you remember to get me a soft drink?"
