Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mmm, I smell a barbeque. New Zealand isn't the only country to make Mountain oysters. They are usually fried in batter but we like ours in butter. What are they?

Answer: Sheep testicles

Mountain oysters aren't that unusual in New Zealand. The barbeque is often cranked up at lamb docking time on many sheep stations - out of sight of the lambs of course!
2. People are eating white things on toothpicks. It's a native New Zealand beetle larvae and is supposed to taste like peanut butter. What is its common name?

Answer: Huhu grub

Huhu grubs only live for two weeks in rotting dead wood. I've tried one and don't remember it tasting like peanut butter - I think I held my nose.
3. Yum, Pikelets, Mousse, and Tarts. Doesn't sound very challenging? Would you have a taste if I told you they were made using bovine colostrum. What is bovine colostrum?

Answer: Cow's first milk

Colostrum is wonderful for a newborn, animal or human, giving it the first load of antibodies to help build a healthy immunity system. I'm pretty sure I had mine as a newborn so I'll pass, thanks.
4. Your mates are daring you to have this one. It's squeezed out of a large animal and it's in a small cup. You'll deserve a prize for drinking what?

Answer: Bull semen

Check out that bull over the fence - he's laughing his pants off!
5. Great, we've reached the beer tent. Let's try this award winning organic lager brewed by West Coast Brewery. What's the name of this local brew that is also the name of a native New Zealand plant?

Answer: Green Fern

The beer tents are VERY popular at these festivals - over 300 kegs are emptied!
6. What's in those jars? Sorry, didn't hear that - pickled what? What are we going to eat?

Answer: Pig's ears

Tasty grizzle - but looks gross.
7. How about a sandwich? No mucking about with these tiny delights. Straight from the river, mixed with egg, into the fry pan then slapped between bread. What is the name of this delicious delicacy?

Answer: Whitebait

Whitebait hatch in rivers in the late autumn then spend a couple of months in the ocean getting bigger before heading upstream back into the rivers - and that's when we scoop them into nets!
8. Ok, so you've been really brave and now you are going to need something to wash the bush tucker down. What plant stalk is brewed with lemon and sugar to make a refreshing fizzy drink?

Answer: Rhubarb champagne

The rhubarb plant contains oxalic acid which is poisonous. There is a tiny amount in the stalks but the leaves can make you very sick.
9. Pork and Puha. Delicious! Pork bones, vegetables and puha boiled up. Puha is the Maori name for what sort of prickly herb?

Answer: Sow thistle

Sow thistle looks like any other prickly weed but has many medicinal uses and has similar levels of vitamin C to an orange.
10. People have gone all out dressing up in costumes. What Kiwi icon are people paying homage to dressed in a hat, black singlet, black shorts and gumboots?

Answer: Fred Dagg

Fred Dagg is a character from the 1970s invented and played by John Clark, a comedian and political satirist. Fred became a household name as the satirical stereotype of the rural New Zealander, with his own TV show and many hilarious songs. John Clark moved to Australia in 1977 but Fred the kiwi icon stayed.
