Grahame Greene was born in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, and became a convert to Roman Catholicism. He had an urge for travel and adventure which is reflected in the exotic locations of many of his books. The book, 'Travels with my Aunt', was filmed in 1972 and starred Maggie Smith and Alec McCowen, and follows the adventures of Henry and Augusta on a journey from Brighton to Paris and thence to Istanbul on the Orient Express, with comic results.

Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin was the architect of the Palace of Westminster, otherwise known as the Houses of Parliament in London. He was regarded as the foremost architect of Victorian England.

Born in 1812, he was the son of a French emigre aristocrat, Auguste Pugin who had come to England to escape the French Revolution. Auguste Pugin was an artist and draughtsman, and it was from him that Augustus learned to love all things Gothic.

August Strindberg, 1849 - 1912. Probably Sweden's most famous playwright, he wrote 60 plays and more than 30 other books of history, fiction and autobiography.
His book, 'The Red Room' (1879) is regarded as the first modern Swedish novel.
