Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is another name for the real medical condition known as lingua villosa nigra?

Answer: black hairy tongue

It's black. It's hairy - or at least it looks that way. It's a tongue. This distasteful sounding disease is actually caused by a fungus that grows on the surface of the tongue. Ptooeee! It is more prevalent with the elderly, antibiotic users, and smokers. Watch out octogenarian cigar aficionados who are taking penicillin!
2. Which Mexican artist used self-portraits to famously depict their own pronounced unibrow and moustache?

Answer: Frida Kahlo

During her life (1907-1954) Kahlo was most often recognized as the wife of Diego Rivera, renown Mexican muralist. She gained international fame on her own in the 1980s, mostly with her self portraits.

In 2001 Kahlo became the first Hispanic woman to be featured on a U.S. postage stamp. Her life was chronicled in the movie "Frida" by director Julie Taymor ("Titus", "Across the Universe").
3. If you are a party to "the hair of the dog that bit you", what would you be doing?

Answer: having a drink to help a hangover

Scientific studies are split as to whether or not this practice works. While people may receive short term benefits from a drink the day after, hangover symptoms may get worse when the alcohol is broken down by the liver.

There must be something to the practice, as many cultures have similar sayings.
Hungarian: "(You may cure), the dog's bite with the fur", and in Central America: "Hair of the same pig".
4. Which encapsulated tumor has been reported to contain hair, teeth and bone?

Answer: Teratoma

A teratoma is one of the strangest tumors known. It can be located almost anywhere in the body, and usually contains cells from all three germ layers of the body (endoderm, mesoderm, and ectoderm). They are thought to be present at birth, and are not often diagnosed until a secondary problem develops in the same area.

They can rarely contain eyeballs or even limbs.
5. Which Biblical figure's strength was dependent on his long hair?

Answer: Samson

Delilah was a bad girlfriend, using pillow talk to discover the secret to Samson's strength: his hair. She ratted him out, and told the bad guys to come in the middle of the night and snip his seven locks. Samson's strength was normal now, so they blinded him and put him to work milling grain.

The Philistines forgot to keep Samson "high and tight", so when his hair grew back, his legendary strength returned. He brought down the house by smashing the main columns of the temple, taking down his enemies along with himself.
6. Which person is NOT matched with his customary hair?

Answer: Hercule Poirot - muttonchop whiskers

Agathe Christie's beloved Belgian detective sported an "upward curled moustache".
His omnipresent pocket watch kept him perpetually punctual. He also had a steadfast desire for a bank account with 444 pounds, 4 shillings, and 4 pence. I want this guy working for me!
7. In "Bennie and the Jets" Elton John sings, "She's got electric boots, a mohair suit, you know I read it in a magazine..." Where does mohair come from?

Answer: angora goats

Angora Goats are shorn twice a year, each producing an average of about 17 lbs (6.5 kg) of mohair each year. The fibers are used for clothes wear, carpets, fabrics, dolls' wigs, and more.

The mohair suit Elton sings about is somewhat pricey, but silky to the touch.
8. What is the scientific name for the drug used to regrow hair?

Answer: Minoxidil

Minoxidil is most commonly known as the topical drug Rogaine. Its ability to regenerate hair was first discovered with patients receiving the medication for low blood pressure. They grew hair as a side effect.

Most patients using topical Minoxidil do experience hair growth, but the gains vanish within months after treatment stops.
9. What little hairy creatures were big trouble for Captain Kirk and the crew of the starship Enterprise?

Answer: tribbles

Tribbles are small, cute and cuddly - unless you're a Klingon. They purr like happy cats. Just one problem... they multiply faster than a bunch of bunnies.

Famous tribble episodes include "The Trouble With Tribbles" from the original series, and "Trial and Tribble-ations" from "Star Trek Deep Space Nine".
10. Which actress scored an 11 for plaiting her hair in beads and cornrows opposite Dudley Moore?

Answer: Bo Derek

"10" was directed by Blake Edwards. Julie Andrews played the girlfriend. The Bo Derek character actually received an 11 out of a 10 rating from Dudley More.

I hope you scored high too!
