Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Classical Music: Which great composer's first opera was called 'Almira'?

Answer: Handel

George Frideric Handel's first opera, 'Almira' was performed in Hamburg in 1705, when the composer was 30 years old. He went on to have a fantastic career, composing such works as his 'Messiah' and 'Water Music', and was eventually adopted as an English subject, the place that he made his home from 1714 until his death.
2. Asian History: The 'Hundred Days Reform' of 1898 was a failed attempt to instigate change in which Asian country?

Answer: China

The movement, led by Kang Youwei and Liang Qichao, and with the blessing of the emperor Guangxu, was meant to modernize China in the manner that the Meiji reformers had begun to modernize Japan a couple of decades earlier. Unfortunately, the dowager empress Cixi got wind of these happenings and crushed the reforms before they could take effect. China would fall well behind Japan in terms of modernization for another century...
3. Famous Authors: Which two great poets were ordered to commit suicide during the reign of Roman Emperor Nero?

Answer: Lucan and Seneca

Seneca was Nero's private tutor, while Lucan was the nephew of Seneca. Both were suspected by Nero of conspiring to have Nero assassinated in a movement to restore the republic.
4. Literature: In the King James Version of the Bible, the 46th words from both the beginning and end of Psalm 46 taken together spell out which author's surname?

Answer: Shakespeare

This is even more remarkable when you consider was 46 years old at the time when the King James Version was complete and ready for printing. Could it be possible that Shakespeare was the true author of the KJV of the Bible...hmmm. (By the way, you have to disregard the introductory sentence, "To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, A Song upon Alamoth" in order to get the proper count. (46:3: Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains SHAKE with the swelling thereof. 46:9 He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the SPEAR in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire.)
5. Artists: Which German painter used a crow-quill to paint most of his portraits?

Answer: Hans Holbein

Like Handel, Holbein was another German who found a new home for himself in England. Holbein worked as a court painter for Henry VIII and he gained many English followers during his time there.
6. Incredible Life: Which bacterium can exist in the hottest habitat in the world?

Answer: Pyrolobus

Pyrolobus fumarii can exist comfortably in a 221 degree F environment, and thrive in hotsprings underground where temperatures go beyond 600 F. The Deinococcus can tolerate 1000- 1.75 million rads of radiation, a measure about 1,000 times stronger than Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Apparently, these buggers can replace damaged DNA faster than the radiation can rip it apart. Maybe, these bacteria might hold the secret of infinite life for us.
7. Ancient Philosophers: The poem called 'Way of Truth' by which ancient Greek philosopher is considered to be the first philosophical demonstration in history?

Answer: Parmenides

In this poem Parmenides attempts to solve the disjunction, 'It is, or it is not'. Can 'it' both be and not be?
8. Geography: Which island in the Persian Gulf is disputed between Qatar and Bahrain?

Answer: Hawar Island

Hmm...could oil perhaps be involved?
9. Art Quotes: Which Renaissance artist said "Art of design was to cleverly fashion a man or women inside a painting"?

Answer: Cellini

Benvenuto Cellini was a 16th century sculptor and goldsmith who is famed not only for his artwork but also for his high-handed autobiography that teems with braggadocio.
10. Founding Fathers: Who was called the "Father of Civilization" by the Japanese in the 7th Century A.D.?
