In the 1590s the English attempted to extend their control beyond an area around Dublin known as the Pale. (Yes that's where the phrase "beyond the Pale" comes from). In 1594 Hugh Roe O'Donnell, soon to be ally of Hugh O'Neill the Earl of Tyrone, ambushed and defeated an English resupply column at 'The Ford of the Biscuits". Prior to this O'Neill had been pledged to Elizabeth I, for which he felt he did not receive proper recognition. Hugh Roe O'Donnell's victory encouraged O'Neill to join him their shared aim to stem the spread of English rule in Ireland.
