Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which European country was the original colonial power in mainland Tanzania?

Answer: Germany

Germany began cementing its hold over what is now known as Tanzania in the 1880's, eventually forming German East Africa in 1891. By this point Britain had established a protectorate over Zanzibar. The Portuguese had arrived in the 16th century, but only gained control of the coast, and were eventually displaced by Omani Arabs in the 18th century.
2. What was the country's name before the 1964 union with Zanzibar?

Answer: Tanganyika

It became Tanganyika after WWI, by which name it was known throughout the British colonial period and beyond independence in 1961. After the 1964 union it became known as the United Republic of Tanzania, as it is today.
3. What sector of industry forms the largest part of Tanzanian exports?

Answer: Agriculture

The main crops include coffee, sisal, cotton and tea. Tourism is another major industry, based around the safari parks, Mount Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar.
4. Tanzania lies on the Equator.

Answer: False

Almost, but not quite - it's about 100km away from the most northerly point of the country.
5. What is the economic centre and largest city of the country?

Answer: Dar es Salaam

6. How many countries share a land border with Tanzania?

Answer: 7

They are: Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique. The Democratic Republic of Congo does not share a land border - it lies on the opposite side of Lake Tanganyika.
7. Which Tanzanian national park joins onto the famous Masai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya?

Answer: Serengeti

Together they form one of the greatest safari destinations in Africa, and are a major tourist draw.
8. The Zanzibar Archipelago lies just off the coast of Tanzania, in the Indian Ocean. What is the Swahili name for the island of Zanzibar?

Answer: Unguja

The Zanzibar Archipelago is a beautiful place, with Arabic, Indian, African and colonial influences. Zanzibar is also known as the spice island, and the archipelago is one of the largest producers of cloves in the world. Oh and there's lots of fantastic white beaches with palm trees, and excellent snorkelling and diving. And before you ask I'm not getting money from the Zanzibar Tourist Corporation to say that.
9. What is the second largest island in the Zanzibar archipelago?

Answer: Pemba

Pemba is the more unspoilt of the two main islands.
10. Where would you be if you were in a Dalla-Dalla?

Answer: In a mini-bus

A Dalla-Dalla is a public transport mini-bus, and riding on one is an interesting and also slightly dangerous activity.
11. You're visiting Tanzania, and you're hungry. Somehow you've managed to pluck up the courage to eat uji. What is it?

Answer: A thin porridge-like substance

It can be flavoured with cinnamon and sugar (or anything, really), however it isn't the most nutritious of foods.
12. What colours are on the Tanzanian flag?

Answer: Green, Yellow, Black and Blue

It's a black diagonal stripe with a yellow band on each side, on a green and blue background.
13. What is the difference in metres between the highest and lowest points in Tanzania? The lowest point is under water.

Answer: 6254

The highest being the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro and the lowest being the floor of Lake Tanganyika. They are also the highest and lowest points in the whole of the African continent.
14. In 1960 Jane Goodall arrived at Gombe Stream to study what kind of primate?

Answer: Chimpanzees

Gombe Stream is Tanzania's smallest national park, and Jane Goodall's studies are still on-going today. It's also possible to visit, although the park is quite difficult to get to.
15. Julius Nyerere, considered by many to be the 'Father of Tanzania', was the first President and wrote a number of books about his theories of African socialism. He also translated two of Shakespeare's plays into Swahili - but which ones?

Answer: 'The Merchant of Venice' and 'Julius Caesar'

He also translated some of Plato's Republic into Swahili.
