Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You enjoyed your trip to Lancaster County PA so much, that you have decided to come back and see what you missed the first time around. You really enjoyed Lititz, so this time you booked a room at the Arden House Bed and Breakfast. This quaint federal era house, is just the ticket for this historic area. You first decide to take a tour of the Moravian Church in Lititz. Here you see a structure built in the 1700's that is considered by many to be the architectural gem of Lancaster County. What structure are you viewing?

Answer: The Corpse House

The Corpse House, also known as the Leichenkappelchen, is located behind the sanctuary of the church. The Moravian faith did not allow for dead bodies to be brought into the sanctuary for funerals, so they were kept in the Corpse House. This structure, built in the 1700's, keeps a constant cool temperature without aid of electricity, and is considered an architectural marvel.
2. Behind the church is located the graveyard, or as it is formally called God's Acre. The Moravians custom of burial is unusual from the norm. What is unusual about their graveyard?

Answer: males are buried on one side and females on the other

Plots are given out in order of death. Males are buried on one side and females on the other. Families are not buried together, unless death has occurred at the same time, then the males would be buried next to each other and the females next to one another.
3. You decide to head over to the town of Ephrata. Here you decide to visit the historical Ephrata Cloister. This religious community was established in 1732, and disbanded in the 1800's. Answer: Fraktur and Music

Members of the Cloister were widely known for their original religious hymns and their frakturs. A fraktur is artistic writing. The fraktur writing, now often associated with the Pennsylvania Dutch, was used in birth records, marriage records, song books and other messages.

Many of the original frakturs can be seen at the Cloister. Sotheby's in New York has sold some of their Frakturs for thousands of dollars at Early American auctions.
4. Living at the Cloister was austere. Members slept on small wooden beds with a wood block pillow. Food was served in small portions, so not to encourage gluttony. Lancaster County is home to the oldest Mennonite Meeting House in the Western Hemisphere and the oldest Amish community in the United States.
7. As evening falls, you decide to take a walking tour of downtown Lancaster City. This tour is something of a Ghost tour. It is full of gossip and gore and more. On the tour you learn that Lancaster City was known for which of these at one time or another in its history?

Answer: All of these

At one time or another, Lancaster City has experienced all of these things. The Paxton Boys slaughtered a group of Conestoga Indians here at the site of the old prison (now Fulton Opera House). This was a stop on the underground railroad prior and during the Civil War. And even when known as a town of churches in the late 1800's and early 1900's, it was also known for its many brothels.
8. While on the tour you learn that the country's first five and dime store was opened in Lancaster. What was the name of the store, that would soon become a world wide chain?

Answer: Woolworth's

The first Woolworth's opened in Lancaster, PA in 1879. The dime store concept would catch on, and the Woolworth's chain would spread world wide. At its heyday, the downtown Lancaster store, would have a soda fountain, as well as a roof top garden.
9. After a good night's sleep, you decide to head on over to the town of Columbia, located on the banks of the Susquehanna River. A very significant event happened here on June 28, 1863, which many believe changed the course of the Civil War. What event happened that day in Columbia:

Answer: the burning of the Wrightsville bridge

Many believe that the burning of the Wrightsville Bridge changed the course of the Civil War. The Wrightsville Bridge was a covered bridge, one of the longest covered bridges in the U.S. at that time. It lay over the Susquehanna River connecting Wrightsville and Columbia.

The confederate troops under the leadership of General Gordon had taken control of the York/Wrightsville area. General Gordon told his troops to secure the bridge so that they could cross the river and take control of Harrisburg and Lancaster, and then eventually Philadelphia.

It is believed that the plan would have then called for General Gordon's troops to head south into Maryland and with General Lee's troops, surround Washington DC. The city of Harrisburg, and Lancaster County, were only being defended by a small militia group, who were poorly trained. Had General Gordon crossed the bridge with his troops, the area would have been pretty defenseless. Members of the militia, decided to burn the bridge, and keep the confederates from crossing.

This was a big sacrifice to the people of Columbia, and all of Lancaster County, as it was their only way of getting to the markets of York. After the bridge was burnt, General Gordon turned his troops around and went to Gettysburg. There he met up with additional confederate troops. He was also met by a significant part of the Union Army, and the rest is history. The covered bridge was never rebuilt but its pilings are still visible.
10. After a visit to the Columbia Historical Society, you are recommended to go visit a world famous museum in town. It is known for having the largest horological collection in North America. The name of the museum is:

Answer: The National Watch and Clock Museum

The National Watch and Clock Museum was officially opened to the public in 1977 with fewer than 1,000 items. Since that time the collection has increased to over 12,000 items. Although the main focus of the museum is on early American clocks and watches, it also features many rare and unusual pieces from other parts of the world. Today, the museum is recognized as the largest and most comprehensive horological collection in North America.
11. You decide to head up north a few miles to the quaint historic town of Marietta. Here you eat a light lunch and have a drink at the Railroad House Bed and Breakfast. Built between 1820 and 1823, this historic inn was not first associated with the railroad. It was built for another purpose. That purpose was:

Answer: to house and feed canal workers

The Railroad House was built between 1820 and 1823 to provide accommodations and food and drink for the river canal traffic. The Pennsylvania Main Line Canal, running from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh by way of the Portage Railroad, ran directly in front of the hotel.
The hotel became a haven for rivermen who worked along the scenic Susquehanna and "It's walls reverberated with inebriate good cheer, an occasional brawl, and all the violence and immorality of the roughest classes."
Later when the railroad came along, it switched to a railway ticket office and station. Currently, it is a lovely bed and breakfast, with a restaurant too.
12. After lunch you decide to just drive around the county and enjoy the many scenic sights of Lancaster County. You drive past many Amish farms, and admire their white homes and barns. You are interested in one type of barn that many of the farms have. The barn is made to have it's panels of wood on the side open up a bit. This gives the barn a rather odd look, as if it is falling apart, when in fact it is not. These barns are made this way because of the crop that is stored in them. What crop needs to be 'aired' while being stored:

Answer: tobacco

Many of the Amish grow tobacco. After it is harvested, it is hung in a tobacco barn in order for the tobacco leaves to dry. It is getting harder and harder for the tobacco growers to sale their crops, as more people quit smoking.
13. While driving you cross many lovely covered bridges. Covered bridges are also called by a slang term. What is that term:
