Founded by Tsar Peter the Great in 1703, Saint Petersburg is one of the most beautiful Russian cities.

Obviously I also visited the Hermitage museum and Petershof, but that would have made it too easy.

Moscow is the capital of Russia. Vladivostok is a Russian city on the Pacific coast. Kiev is the capital of Ukraine.

Answer: Xi'an

Qin Shi Huang united China in the 3rd century BCE to become the first Chinese emperor. He was so fearful of death that he commissioned an army to be made from baked earth (terracotta) to accompany him to the afterlife.

In 1974, a farmer accidentally stumbled upon some of the figures when digging a well. The terracotta army is a UNESCO world heritage site.

Beijing is the capital of China. Kunming and Shanghai are other Chinese cities.

Hué was the capital of Vietnam until 1945. The Purple City (similar to the Forbidden City in Beijing) was the residence of the imperial family.

Hanoi is the modern capital of Vietnam. Saigon used to be the capital of South Vietnam and is now called Ho Chi Minh City. Da Nang is also a Vietnamese city.

For millennia Samarkand has been famous for being on the centre of the silk road. The city was sacked by Genghis Khan in 1220 CE. In 1370 CE, Samarkand reached its 'golden age' when Tamerlane (Timur Lenk) made it his capital.

Buchara and Khiva are also Uzbeki cities on the silk road. Tashkent is the capital of Uzbekistan.

The temples were carved out of the rocks by pharaoh Ramses II in the 13th century BCE. Between 1960 and 1970 the Assouan Dam was constructed which threatened the complex. The temples were replaced between 1964 and 1968.

Edfu, Philae and Kom Ombo are other Egyptian archaeological sites.

El Calafate is a small city in Argentine southern Patagonia and a perfect place stay when you want to visit the famous glaciers of the national park Los Glaciares.

Ushuaïa is considered to be the southernmost city of the world and is situated on the island Tierra del Fuego (Land of Fire).

Punta Arenas is a city in the Chilean part of southern Patagonia.

Trelew is an Argentine city in northern Patagonia.
12. I'm standing in what used to be the capital of the Inca Empire. Most colonial buildings, such as the Corichancha, were built on old Inca foundations. On the outskirts of the city I will visit the ruins of the Inca fortress Sacsayhuaman. Where am I?

Answer: Cuzco

After the conquest many Incan buildings were destroyed by the Spanish. They couldn't destroy the Inca foundations so they built their buildings on top of it. When an earthquake struck Cuzco in 1950 many colonial buildings collapsed, but the old Inca foundations were hardly affected, showing evidence of Inca genius.

Machu Picchu is a lost Inca city discovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911 CE. Vilcabamba was the last Inca city to be conquered by the Spanish, ending Inca resistance. Lima is the capital of Peru.
