Quiz about By Way of Which States Without Peeking

By Way of Which States (Without Peeking)! Quiz

This quiz will be most challenging without looking at a map. It will test your ability to visualize a map of the Continental United States. Remember the questions generally are about the fewest number of states, not the shortest route in miles.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Driving through the fewest number of states to get from the Atlantic Coast of the United States (not the Gulf of Mexico) to the Pacific Coast of the United States will take you through all of the following except for which?

Answer: Kansas

There are several routes that will allow you to get from one ocean to the other in only seven states, but none of them include Kansas. They are: Virginia-Kentucky or Tennessee-Missouri or Arkansas-Oklahoma or Texas-New Mexico-Arizona-and California. The east-west length of Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Tennessee allow you to get a third of the way across the country in only two steps. Texas is much longer east to west than Oklahoma, but they both get you to New Mexico.
2. Not using the three Pacific Coast states, what is the fewest number of states you must pass through to get from Canada to Mexico?

Answer: three

There are two routes that allow for this trip in only three states. They are Idaho-Nevada-Arizona and Idaho-Utah-Arizona. I suppose if you hopped from Utah to New Mexico at the Four Corners junction you could go Idaho-Utah-New Mexico.
3. If you drive from the state farthest to the Northeast to the state farthest to the Southeast, staying as close to the Atlantic as possible, you will be able to stop and see the Liberty Bell.

Answer: False

The states are Maine-New Hampshire-Massachusetts-Rhode Island- Connecticut- New York- New Jersey- Delaware- Maryland- Virginia - North Carolina- South Carolina- Georgia - and Florida. The Liberty Bell is in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and while Philadelphia is a major port, it does not sit on the Atlantic Coast and instead handles ship traffic on the Delaware River.
4. If you start in the state where the head waters of the Mississippi River are found and drive south to the state where it dumps into the Gulf of Mexico, staying on the west bank of the river, you will go through the home states of three presidents. Which three presidents are they?

Answer: Hoover, Truman, Clinton

Your drive will take you through Minnesota -Iowa- Missouri- Arkansas- and Louisiana. Herbert Hoover was from Iowa, Harry Truman from Missouri, and Bill Clinton from Arkansas. All three have presidential libraries in their respective home states.
5. OK, now let's drive down the east bank of the Mississippi. The river serves as the western border or part of the western border for five states. What state has the longest western border using the Mississippi River?

Answer: Illinois

The five states are Wisconsin, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Mississippi. The two states associated with Lincoln are Illinois, where he lived as an adult, and Kentucky, where he was born. Of these, Illinois has the longest west border created by the river and Kentucky has the shortest.
6. If you drive from Jacksonville, FL to Houston, TX, staying as close to the Gulf of Mexico as you can, how many states, inclusive, will you drive through?

Answer: five

They are Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. As I understand it, when Mississippi and Alabama were created, they were laid out so that both states were able to have port cities on the Gulf of Mexico; Gulfport and Biloxi, Mississippi and Mobile, Alabama.
7. If you drive from Chicago, IL to Miami, FL, using a route that takes you through the fewest states, must you drive through Kentucky?

Answer: No

There are four different routes that allow you to get from Chicago to Miami by passing through only five states. Two of them pass through Kentucky. But you can by-pass Kentucky altogether if you leave Illinois and go to Missouri. Since Missouri extends farther south than Kentucky and borders Tennessee, it is possible avoid the Bluegrass State.

The route would be Illinois to Missouri to Tennessee to either Alabama or Georgia and then into Florida.
8. Rather than simply getting from coast to coast let's get more specific. In driving through the fewest number of states to get from New York City to San Francisco, CA, which of the following sites and landmarks can you visit?

Answer: Independence Hall, The Gateway Arch, and Carlsbad Caverns

There are two routes that allow this drive through only nine states. They are: New York, to Pennsylvania, to West Virginia or Ohio, to Kentucky, to Missouri, to Oklahoma, to New Mexico, to Arizona, and into California. You can see the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, PA, the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, MO, and Carlsbad Caverns in Carlsbad, NM. All the others sites are worth seeing, but they take you way off the route.
9. If you drive through the fewest number of states to get from Seattle, WA to Miami, FL, what state capitals can you visit?

Answer: Cheyenne, Nashville, and Montgomery

This is a bit trickier as you have to look for a combination of most distance south and east in single states. There are two routes that will complete the route in only eight states: Washington, to Idaho, to Wyoming, to Nebraska, to Missouri, to Tennessee, to either Alabama or Georgia, and into Florida.

These options allow you to visit Cheyenne, WY, Nashville, TN, and Montgomery, AL. There a several routes that will get you from Seattle to Miami in nine states and lots that will get you there in ten.
10. I want to make a grand driving tour of all 48 Continental United States, but I want to drive through each state only once. What state must I either start in or finish in?

Answer: Maine

Maine is the only state that borders only one other state, that being New Hampshire. If I start or finish in any other state I will have to drive through New Hampshire twice.
