1. This is a photo of Saint Domnius Cathedral in Split, which stands in the middle of the palace complex that was built by which Roman Emperor?

Answer: Diocletian

The palace complex was built in early 4th century AD. It was be used as a residence for the Emperor after he retired. The complex, with its strong walls, offered safety to people from the surrounding areas and it was gradually turned into a residential area. The city of Split continued its expansion to the areas surrounding the complex.
2. This is a view of Split from the harbour. We were waiting to get a ferry to the island of Hvar. The name of the island comes from the Greek "Pharos" which means what?

Answer: Lighthouse

The ancient city of Split was named Aspalathos by the ancient Greeks that established it and was renamed Spalatum during Roman times.
Hvar was one of the many islands inhabited by the ancient Greeks and it was used as a trading post.
The other options are names of other Croatian islands.
3. This photo shows one of the reasons why we visited Hvar. What is the name of this aromatic plant?

Answer: Lavender

The photo also shows that we were a little late with our visit! The flowers should have been bright and as you can see they are not! There is an annual festival on the island celebrating the lavender harvest season. It normally takes place in June!
4. The main settlement of Hvar is called.... Hvar! On top of the hill above the city there is a fortress which is surprisingly called what?

Answer: Spanjola

The construction of the fortress started in 1282 after the islanders asked Venice to protect them from pirates. The name Spanjola (The Spanish) was given to the fortress because of Spanish engineers taking part in the construction.
The fortress was completed by the Venetians in 1551.
5. This lake is part of the Krka National Park. What geographical feature is Krka?

Answer: River

The river is 73 kilometres long and it fully enclosed in the National Park. It is situated in the middle of Dalmatia and it covers an area of 109 square kilometres. As you can see from the photo the park offers spectacular views.
6. This is one of the many waterfalls along the river. Is swimming allowed near the falls?

Answer: Yes

There are designated areas where the visitor can cool down and see, from very close, the falls. There are foot paths around the falls and one can walk under shady trees and beside water streams. There is a great variety of fish and water plants that can be observed during the walk.
7. This is Visovac island monastery in the Krka National Park. Which Christian Catholic order of monks runs it?

Answer: Franciscans

The Franciscan Monastery of Our Lady of Mercy and the Church of Our Lady of Visovac is situated in one of the most beautiful surroundings, for a monastery, in the world.
The monastery was originally set up by Augustinian monks and was dedicated to Saint Paul. The Franciscans came to the site of the monastery after they were driven out by the invading Turks. The monastery was reconstructed in the 18th century.

Answer: Trogir

The town is very well preserved and offers a variety of buildings in different architectural styles. The main town and port are built on an island with bridges connecting it to the mainland part of the town. As are many other places in Croatia the town was established by the Greeks as part of trading routes connecting the Dalmatian coast and islands with Italy.

9. This castle is called Kamerlengo and it is situated on the mainland side of the town. What is Kamerlengo?

Answer: Administrative official

The castle dates from the 15th century and was built by the Venetians. The castle is now totally empty and the surrounding area is used for open air concerts.
Kamerlengo or Camerlengo in Italian is a chamberlain an official that is in charge of the administration of revenues.
In the Catholic Church the Camerlengo is an office of the Vatican.

Answer: Makarska

Makarksa is the capital of the Riviera with the same name. It offers many hotels, restaurants and other places of amusement and entertainment.
The mountain range that towers over the town is called Biokovo and it is the second highest mountain range in Croatia. The highest peak stands at 1762 meters.
The other three options can be found in Italy.
