Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Cartoonist Walt Kelly is best known for his comic strip "Pogo" which is set in the Okefenokee Swamp, but where in the U.S. this swamp is located?

Answer: on the border of Florida and Georgia

The Okefenokee is a shallow wetland of almost 700 sq. mi. and is the largest blackwater swamp in America. Titanium is also mined there. It teems with abundant wildlife and plants which are protected by the Okefenokee Swamp Alliance.
2. If you were visiting a country whose flag consisted of a green background with a red isosceles triangle (based on the hoist side) with a black border superimposed on a long, yellow arrowhead with a white border in what South American nation would you be?

Answer: Guyana

Formerly named British Guiana, it is located on the northern coast of South America. It is mainly an agricultural society concentrating on rice and sugar crops, but also derives income from mining, lumber and fishing. English is the official language.
3. Which country is missing from this list: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama?

Answer: Belize

The list names the countries of Central America. Only Belize was omitted. Ecuador and Suriname are in South America and Senegal is in Africa. Belize, the northernmost country of C.A., borders Mexico on the north, Guatemala on the west and the Caribbean Sea on the east. Its capital is Belmopan.
4. Which U.S. state has the most federally owned land by area?

Answer: Alaska

Of Alaska's total area of 571,065 sq. mi., the U.S. government owns 381,010 sq. mi. or about two-thirds of the state. Much of these reserved lands are wilderness, park and recreation areas, military use, and wildlife refuges. Nevada has the most by percentage, but nowhere near the square mileage of Alaska.
5. You really would have to like flowers to live in the U.S. community of Humptulips, but in what U.S. state is this slightly salacious sounding place?

Answer: Washington

It is located in Grays Harbor County in western Washington. Its name may have derived from a Native American phrase which means "hard rowing", a likely reference to the difficulty navigating the Humptulips River on which it is located. It is also mentioned in the book "Another Roadside Attraction" by Tom Robbins. This doesn't appear to have any connection to Holland, Michigan.
6. On your next vacation you've decided to take a boating trip on the Danube River. What sight would you NOT expect to see or visit on your voyage?

Answer: Rosenborg Castle

Rosenborg Castle is in Copenhagen, Denmark and not on the Danube.

Devin Castle is located at the conjunction of the Morava and Danube rivers in Bratislava. In 1961, it was made into a national monument and museum.

Botanischer Garten in Linz, Austria, has extensive collections of Alpine plants, cacti, rhododendrons and orchids.

Stift Klosterneuburg is an Augustinian Abbey in Klosterneuburg, Austria. It is famous for its hand carved choir loft, stained glass windows, a 17th-century organ, enameled altar, and ceiling frescoes.
7. Which of these large cities of India is NOT a port city?

Answer: Hyderabad

Also known as the City of Pearls, Hyderabad is an inland city in the south central area of India. It also has the nickname of Cyberabad because it has become a center of information technology. Kolkatta and Chennai are on the east coast of India on the Bay of Bengal. Mumbai is on the west coast on the Arabian Sea.
8. The island of Sulawesi was formerly known as what?

Answer: Celebes

Sulawesi belongs to the Sunda archipelago of Indonesian islands. Its prominent geographic features are four long narrow peninsulas and two large gulfs (Tomini and Boni) making it a look somewhat like the silhouette of a really surprised crocodile. Its main source of income is iron mining.
9. Where in the world is Davis Strait?

Answer: between Baffin Island and Greenland

Davis Strait is actually a part of the Labrador Sea. It was named after the English explorer John Davis who navigated it looking for a Northwest Passage. The average depth is between 0.6 and 1.2 miles (1000 and 2000 meters). It is also an important fishing area.
10. If you went to the geographical coordinates 19°03'N, 99°22'W, where would you be?

Answer: Mexico City, Mexico

The capital of Mexico, Mexico City is centrally located on a high arid plateau. It is an important cultural, financial and industrial hub of almost 9 million people. In September 1985, the city was struck by a magnitude 8.1 earthquake which affected a presidential election at that time.
