Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A statue of which Wild West hero was erected in the east end of Glasgow in 2006?

Answer: Buffalo Bill

The statue of Buffalo Bill Cody stands on Whitehill Street in the Dennistoun area of the city and was unveiled on the 17th November 2006. It was commissioned by Regency Homes and was erected to mark their new development and as a tribute to Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show which ran nearby in 1891/1892. Ironically of the four Wild West heroes mentioned above Buffalo Bill is the only one not thought to have Scottish ancestry.
2. Built in time for the 2014 Commonwealth Games The Chris Hoy Velodrome is located very near to which Glasgow football team's stadium?

Answer: Celtic FC

The National Indoor Sports Arena and Chris Hoy Velodrome, a major venue for the Commonwealth Games of 2014, is located in the redeveloped East End of Glasgow. Celtic Park, the venue of the Opening Ceremony of July 23rd 2014 is virtually across the road.
3. In 2011 a film crew took over part of Glasgow city centre to shoot a film. The film was called "World War Z" and starred Brad Pitt, but which US city was Glasgow meant to be in the movie?

Answer: Philadelphia

"World War Z" (2013) is a post apocalypse film. Glasgow stars as the city of Philadelphia in the movie. Rumour has it they have actually planned a sequel movie, to be shot in Philadelphia which is to represent Glasgow - it's to be called No Mean Zity
4. You are visiting Glasgow and you are invited to the Subcrawl. What would you expect?

Answer: A journey on the city's underground, and getting off at each station for a drink

Fifteen underground stations, fifteen bars, fifteen drinks. This constitutes the famous/infamous Glasgow Subcrawl, starting at any point on the underground network and stopping off at each station for a pub visit and a drink. You can travel clockwise on the outer circle or anti clockwise on the inner circuit and any combination of the two as long as each station is visited and a drink consumed.

This activity is popular with students and stag and hen parties. Buy yourself an unlimited travel ticket and you're all set. Don't count on remembering every detail of the tour though!
5. Who or what are the Gallowgate Twins ?

Answer: A pair of high rise buildings in the east end of the city

The Gallowgate twins are a pair of high rise flats on the Gallowgate in the East end of the city. Having lived in and around the city for nearly 60 years, I have seen them often, but it was only recently I've learned their nickname.
6. Inspired by the Doges' Palace (Palazzo Ducale) in Venice, the Scottish architect William Leiper designed a structure in Glasgow, which was completed in 1892. What is this landmark and tourist attraction which stands at Glasgow Green?

Answer: Templeton Carpet Factory

All these structures can be found in or around Glasgow Green. They're all worth a visit, but go during the day, it's a red light district by night.
7. Where in Glasgow was the world's first official international football match played?

Answer: West of Scotland Cricket Ground

On 30th November 1872 the first ever International match was played at the West of Scotland Cricket Club ground at Hamilton Crescent, Partick, Glasgow. The game played however was football not cricket. The match was played between Scotland and England and the result a no score draw.
8. There are many live music venues in Glasgow, one of the best being the unusually named King Tut's Wah Wah Hut. Which band acquired a manager after they were "discovered" playing a gig in King Tut's?

Answer: Oasis

It's not a big secret that Alan McGee of Creation Records signed Oasis after hearing them playing a live gig in King Tut's. The rest is history.
9. The Rotunda building on the Broomielaw has been a casino and an Oriental restaurant serving Thai and Japanese food, but what was its original function?

Answer: An entrance to a tunnel under the river

The Rotunda building referred to is the North Rotunda and is one of a pair, the other being the South Rotunda on the other side of the river which has been mainly neglected over the years. They are entrances to a disused tunnel under the river Clyde which opened in 1896 and was used by pedestrians and horse drawn traffic. Each building is circular with a domed roof, and housed the hydraulic lift shafts by which you accessed the tunnels.

There were actually three tunnels, two were used for horse drawn traffic and were filled in 1986.

The other was for pedestrian traffic and closed in 1980. I don't know how the horses get across now, they probably swim across the river!
10. What is the name of Scotland's purpose built national arena which they started to build in 2011 next to the Clyde Auditorium (The Armadillo). Clue: it was named after its main sponsor.

Answer: The Scottish Hydro Arena

The Scottish Hydro Arena (nicknamed, The Hydro), a 45 Metres tall building was designed with a distinctive silver dome and an audience capacity of around 12,000. It had an original price tag of somewhere in the region of £125 million. Designed by Foster and Partners who also designed the nearby Armadillo it was modelled on Greek and Roman amphitheatres.

It can handle 140 events per year, mostly concerts with some entertainment and sporting events thrown in. One of the reasons for its creation was to host the net ball and gymnastic events for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Scottish Hydro made an original commitment to invest £1.5million a year for ten years on the project. Source: Scottish Sunday Mail.
