Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We're in the south at a popular tourist attraction. Rich in history, reportedly haunted and the site of a devastating shooting massacre in 1996. Where are we?

Answer: Port Arthur

The ruins of the penal settlement of Port Arthur have attracted tourists for many years. It is one of the most haunted sites in the state.
2. This penal settlement has become a tourist attraction. A natural feature that attracts tourists are the Painted Cliffs. Where are we?

Answer: Maria Island

Maria Island was named by Abel Tasman in honour of the wife of the Governor-in-Chief of the Dutch East Indies, Anthony Van Diemen. It has been twice used as a penal settlement, first from 1825 to 1832 and again from 1842 to 1851. It has since been used for sheep grazing, grape growing and cement mining. (Cement mining is the procurement of the raw materials used to make cement.

These include limestone and silica.) In 1972 the entire island became a national park and has since become a popular tourist attraction.
3. If you registered your car in Tasmania after the mid nineties and got a brand new set of license plates, what slogan would be printed on them?

Answer: Your Natural State

The old slogans of 'The Apple Isle' and 'Holiday Isle' were replaced in the mid nineties with the current 'Your Natural State'. 'Love This Place' is an advertising campaign designed to rival the famous 'I Love NY' campaign (but is so far nowhere near a success).
4. It's late winter and you fancy a trip to the snow for a little skiing. Where should you go?

Answer: Ben Lomond

Ben Lomond is a popular destination for skiers in the north east of Tasmania.
5. I am a town located on the North West coast of Tasmania, between the towns of Penguin and Forth. Which town am I?

Answer: Ulverstone

Sulphur Creek and Wynyard are both west of Penguin. Latrobe is east of Forth. Ulverstone is right between the two. It is located at the mouth of the Leven River. At the time of the 2001 census, it had a population of 9,515, 2.8% less than at the time of the 1996 census. It was first settled in 1848 by Andrew Risby and his family.
6. 'The Nut' is the name given to a large headland. At 152 metres it dominates which town that huddles beneath it?

Answer: Stanley

Located on the North West Coast of Tasmania and 22km from Smithton, Stanley is regarded as an historic town. Apart from exploring the beautifully preserved buildings of the township, you can follow the walking path to the top of the Nut or take the chair lift to the summit of this large chunk of rock to enjoy spectacular views from the top.

The Nut is actually the remains of an ancient volcano active some 25 - 70 million years ago.
7. If you wanted to visit a seahorse farm, where should you head?

Answer: Beauty Point

Beauty Point claims to be the only place in the world with a seahorse farm. Seahorse World is a fifty minute drive from the city of Launceston. It is both an educational tourist attraction and a centre for research helping to ensure that the humble hippocampus (seahorse) is around for many years to come.
8. Which of the following is not in Tasmania?

Answer: Bendigo

Bendigo is in Victoria.
9. I am a small town 49 km north of Hobart. Until 1840, I was known as Green Ponds. Which town am I?

Answer: Kempton

Kempton is named after Anthony Fenn Kemp, a soldier and merchant said to have marked up the goods in his shop by 100%. The town was renamed due to his holdings of land in the area, not because of his benevolent personality.
10. I am a town situated on the South Esk River. I was originally known as Collins Hill. I was once home to John Kelly whose son Ned achieved fame as a bushranger. I am 20km south of Launceston and was named after the surveyor and painter George William Evans. Which town am I?

Answer: Evandale

Evandale is home to over thirty buildings of historic interest, most in their original condition. Unsurprisingly, it is classified as an historic town. It is famous for hosting the annual Penny Farthing races.
