Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. California's eastern border is with Nevada. Apart from having clear water and nice beaches, this lake is great for hiking and canoeing in the summer and skiing and snowboarding in the winter. What's the name of this deep lake?

Answer: Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is a stunning freshwater lake located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, straddling the border of California and Nevada. It is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and tourists because of its clear waters and the stunning nature surrounding it. It is also the second-deepest lake in North America and the largest North American alpine lake.

While the casinos of Nevada can be found right up to the border between the two states, the California side offers many resort towns that are fun to stay at. In the winter, the snow is incredible, thus, many people flock from all over to ski and snowboard. In the summer, the hiking, swimming, and boating opportunities are what draw people in. There is even a long trail that circles the entire lake and can be hiked (usually over the span of two weeks).
2. Sacramento became the capital of California in 1854. Close to several mining communities and on the Sacramento River, which event in California's history was key in choosing Sacramento as the capital? (Think about the San Francisco 49ers...)

Answer: The Gold Rush

The capital of California was in Monterey, San Jose, Vallejo, and finally in Benicia. However, in 1854, at the heart of the Gold Rush that started in 1848, but really took off in 1849 (hence, the 49ers), Sacramento was made the state capital. It had an advantageous geographical position and incredible accessibility. Situated along the Sacramento River, the city provided a crucial inland port, allowing for transportation and communication links to the goldfields in the Sierra Nevada. It is also centrally located and politicians hoped that this would allow representatives from all over the large state to feel that they're linked together.

Sacramento hosts a variety of cultural events and festivals which help showcase its dynamic arts and culinary scenes. The city's proximity to wine regions and outdoor recreational areas, along with the American River Parkway and numerous parks, provides residents and visitors with ample opportunities for outdoor activities. Although it's not a big city, it's still influential and important enough to own the right to be the State Capital.
3. Like something out of Bacchus' dreams, the Napa Valley is a beautiful venue with a laid-back atmosphere. Sit back, relax, grab a drink, and tell me, what is the Napa Valley world-renowned for?

Answer: Wineries

The Napa Valley, located in Northern California, is one of the most renowned wine regions in the world. In fact, there are over 400 different wineries located in the valley, from large ones (like Beringer, Robert Mondavi, Silver Oaks, and Domaine Chandon) to small boutique locations, all producing top-quality wines. The region is especially known for its production of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc.

Other than the wineries and vineyards, the region is very pastoral and has rolling hills, green expanses, and postcard-ready landscapes. There is also the Old Faithful Geyser of California, one of three "faithful" geysers (that blows off steam at very regular intervals), though not as famous as its counterpart in Yellowstone.
4. San Francisco is one of the more interesting cities in the State of California. Which of these attractions can *not* be found in San Francisco and the surrounding area?

Answer: Disneyland

Construction of the Golden Gate Bridge began in 1933 during the Great Depression and was completed in 1937. It connects the city of San Francisco to the south to Marin County to the north and spans the entrance to the bays of the bay area from the Pacific Ocean. It is a 2,737-meter- long suspension bridge which is a distinctive colour of orange.

Located in the Russian Hill neighbourhood of San Francisco, Lombard Street is one of the most iconic and recognizable sights of the city. It's a route down the side of a hill that has eight tight turns. This was built in 1922 in order to be able to go down the steep side of the hill.

Colloquially called "The Rock", Alcatraz is an island in the San Francisco Bay that, for many years, housed a maximum-security prison. Some notorious criminals were incarcerated there like Al Capone and "Machine Gun" Kelly. They claim that no escapes were ever made out of the prison.

Disneyland, on the other hand, can be found near Los Angeles.
5. So, sir, you're an avid rock climber and you're looking for a challenge. Well, look no further than Yosemite National Park! Yes, sir, apart from the stunning views and gorgeous waterfalls, there's a granite monolith that tests the mettle of even the most experienced of climbers. What's it called?

Answer: El Capitan

Dominating the skyline of the northern part of the Yosemite Valley, El Capitan is a granite monolith that rises majestically out of the ground. With a sheer rock face, thinking about climbing El Capitan is enough to make even the most experienced of rock climbers quake in fear. Indeed, the ascent called "The Nose" is world-renowned for its 900 meters (3000 feet) of just... straight... vertical. It was first ascended in 1958 and most climbers spend multiple days on the wall itself as they attempt to reach the top.

Yosemite National Park itself is in eastern California and is located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Apart from the climbing at El Capitan and Half Dome, the hikes through the park are breathtaking. Some of the tallest waterfalls in North America can be found here like Bridalveil Fall and Yosemite Falls. Giant sequoias can also be found throughout. Yosemite National Park is not only a haven for outdoor enthusiasts but also a place of immense natural beauty, conservation, and environmental significance.
6. This place is so arid, you could die within hours during the day. It is where the hottest naturally-occurring temperature on Earth was recorded, as well as the lowest point on the continent. What's the name of this diabolical place?

Answer: Death Valley

Death Valley is a desert valley located in Eastern California (and also a small part of Nevada) within the Mojave Desert of the United States. It is one of the hottest places on Earth and one of the most inhospitable. At Badwater Basin, it's 86 meters below sea level which makes it the lowest point in North America.

Summers are extremely hot in Death Valley, with daytime temperatures often exceeding 120°F (49°C). The hottest temperature on record was measured on July 10, 1913, at Furnace Creek Ranch, and it was a mind-blowing 134°F (56.7°C)! It was designated as a national park in 1994 and the area covers over 3.4 million acres.

Despite the harsh conditions, the Timbisha Shoshone people have lived in the region for centuries, learning to adapt to the challenging environment. There were also resources found in the valley and remnants of several ghost towns can be seen as you pass through. Also, in spite of its forbidding name and harsh climate, Death Valley offers unique and breathtaking landscapes which bring to it many visitors every year.
7. Immortalized on the cover of a U2 album, this cactus has a US National Park named after it that's located in California. What's the name of the cactus and the park where one might see Arch Rock, Hidden Valley, and Old Woman Rock?

Answer: Joshua Tree

Joshua Tree National Park is located in southeastern California, USA, and was established as a national monument in 1936 and later designated as a national park in 1994. The park is named after the Joshua Tree, a distinctive species of yucca plant that is native to the Mojave Desert. These 'trees' have spiky leaves and a characteristic shape and they give a distinctive look to the desert.

Joshua Tree National Park contains parts of two deserts, the Colorado Desert in the east, and the Mojave Desert in the west. Both deserts lend a different type of climate, plants, and animal species to each part of the park. The Colorado Desert is generally hotter and lower in elevation than the Mojave Desert. The Joshua Trees themselves are prevalent in the Mojave Desert section of the park.

The park is famous for its rugged rock formations, many of which were shaped by wind and water erosion over millions of years. The park offers a network of hiking trails and opportunities for rock climbing. There is a diverse selection of wildlife that can be seen, especially at night, which is also particularly impressive for going stargazing.
8. Just south of Los Angeles is a small island in the Gulf of Santa Catalina. A picturesque location to stay, though never a locale for gambling, what is one of the more iconic buildings on the island?

Answer: Catalina Casino

Catalina is a picturesque island located off the coast of Southern California in the Gulf of Santa Catalina. Officially named Santa Catalina Island, it is a short ferry ride from Los Angeles and a relaxing place to visit.

The first known inhabitants of Catalina Island were the Tongva people, also known as the Gabrielino. They lived on the island for thousands of years before the arrival of European explorers. The Spanish discounted the place as unimportant and it was then used by smugglers and pirates as a safe haven. It was eventually bought out by American investors.

William Wrigley Jr. bought the majority of the island and even used it as a Spring Training facility for his baseball team, the Chicago Cubs. There are two towns on the island, Avalon and Two Harbors. Wrigley built the Catalina Casino in Avalon using the word 'casino' in the Spanish sense of the word as 'gathering place' and not a location for gambling.
9. This southern Californian city is the home to SeaWorld, the former home to one of the most famous killer whales, Shamu. It also has a world-famous zoo, the USS Midway aircraft carrier, and the vibrant La Jolla neighbourhood. What city am I describing?

Answer: San Diego

San Diego is California's second-most populous city which is located in the southwestern corner of California, down near the border with Mexico. Known for its pleasant climate, beautiful beaches, and cultural attractions, San Diego is a popular destination for tourists and a vibrant and thriving city.

The San Diego Zoo is one of the most famous and important zoos in the world. It is well-known for its conservation efforts with endangered species, especially with elephants. The habitats constructed are at the forefront of innovation for animals in captivity. On the other hand, SeaWorld, the marine park, has been the subject of debate for decades. While the animal shows there are exciting and their commitment to conservation unwavering, the treatment of the captive animals has been called into question.

San Diego is also known for its amazing beaches, Old Town (considered to be the birthplace of the state), the La Jolla upscale neighbourhood, and the nightlife at the Gaslamp Quarter. The USS Midway, a WWII aircraft carrier, is also docked in San Diego permanently and is now a museum.
10. Like the questions in this quiz which are arranged from north to south, there is a highway in the State which also goes north to south, all along the California coast. It's the number one highway in the country in terms of views. What number did the Pacific Coast Highway get?

Answer: 1

Down the California coast runs Highway 1, also known as the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). The Pacific Coast Highway begins in Leggett, California, in the north and winds its way down the coast, passing through several coastal towns and major cities, including San Francisco, Monterey, Big Sur, Santa Barbara, and Malibu. The highway continues south, hugging the coastline until it reaches its southern terminus in Dana Point.

Traveling down the Pacific Coast Highway is a popular road trip which is known for its dramatic coastal landscapes, picturesque seaside cliffs, and opportunities to explore charming coastal communities. The stretch between San Francisco and Los Angeles, particularly the section through Big Sur, is renowned for its scenic beauty and is considered one of the most beautiful coastal drives in the world.
