Zionsville is about 15 miles northwest of Indianapolis. The town saw remarkable growth after 1990, tripling in size from around 9000 to over 26,000 by 2017. According to a 2010 study, Zionsville had one of the highest per capita incomes in Indiana, with a median family income over $100,000. Zane Grey wrote westerns. He is best known for "Riders of the Purple Sage" (1912) in which a young woman rejects the Mormon Church in 1871.

Zanesville is roughly 25 miles east of Columbus, Ohio. It was founded in the 1790s, and named Zanesville in 1801. For a brief period (1810 to 1812) it was the state capitol of Ohio. The town is located on the Muskingum and Licking Rivers.
6. If residents of the small town of Zilwaukee, Michigan, get bored, what is the nearest city for them to visit?

Answer: Saginaw

Zilwaukee is in Saginaw County, about five miles north of Saginaw. The founders named the town in hopes people would confuse it with Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The plan does not seem to have worked, as Milwaukee has around 300 times more people than Zilwaukee. The town is located on the Saginaw River.
7. True or false: The people of Zimmerman, Minnesota changed the name of their town in 1967 to honor songwriter Bob Dylan.

Answer: False

Zimmerman did change its name in 1967, but it is named after Moses Zimmerman, one of the town's early settlers. Zimmerman is around 40 miles north-northwest of the Minneapolis area. Before 1967, it was Lake Fremont, named after western explorer John C Fremont.

Bob Dylan is a native of Minnesota; he was born in Duluth and grew up in Hibbing, about 140 miles north of Zimmerman.
8. True or false: The towns of Zebulon in Georgia, Kentucky and North Carolina are all located in counties named after explorer Zebulon Pike.

Answer: False

The Zebulons in Georgia and Kentucky are both in Pike Counties, and are named after the famous western explorer. The Zebulon in North Carolina is in Wake County, and is named after Zebulon Vance, a governor of North Carolina.

Zebulon Pike (1779-1813) was a contemporary of Lewis and Clark. Thomas Jefferson sent him to explore much of the new Louisiana territory. He is probably best known for his namesake mountain near Colorado Springs.

Zebulon Vance (1830-1894) served as governor of North Carolina twice (during the Confederacy and Reconstruction) and as US Senator (1879-1894). Vance is one of the most revered figures in North Carolina history.
9. The border town of Zapata, Texas is a mecca for participants in what extreme activity?

Answer: hang gliding

Zapata is a haven for hang gliding enthusiasts. Because it is on the edge of two weather fronts, it creates perfect dry air conditions that generate thermals, gusts of wind that lift gliders. Several world record hang gliding runs have begun in Zapata.
10. Zelienople, Pennsylvania, a small town north of Pittsburgh, was founded by what type of settlers in 1802?

Answer: German

Zelienople was founded by Baron Detmar Basse, an emigrant from Germany who arrived in 1802. A fellow German, George Rapp, founded the city of Harmony right next door. It was one of the first communes in America.

The town was declared a historic site by the state of Pennsylvania in October 1947. It notes the town was named after Basse's daughter Zelie. Why Zelienople was viewed as more historically significant than dozens of other small towns in Pennsylvania is uncertain.
