5. If my uncle sent me a post card of the ruins of Petra, it would tell me he is visiting which of the following countries?

Answer: Jordan

The lost city of Petra is carved into pink sandstone cliffs in Jordan. This prehistoric city was literally 'lost' to the Western world for many hundreds of years. Located in southwest corner of Jordan it was at one time a busy trading center as well as the capital of the Nabataean empire from approximately 400 B.C. until A.D. 106.

The beautiful ruins of this once magnificent city are one of the most popular tourist attractions in Jordan.
6. Three years ago I visited which country in order to see the volcanic Izu Islands?

Answer: Japan

Japan's Izu Islands are known for their lush landscapes and tropical weather. One of the more unusual things about these islands is that in order to visit the islands, you must carry a gas mask with you at all times. These islands are part of an active volcanic chain that has had dozens of eruptions throughout recorded history. One of the results of this volcanic activity is that harmful gasses are often released through the ground.

It is the poisonous gasses that resulted in Japanese laws requiring visitors to carry gas masks while touring many of these islands.
7. My grandfather and I went to which of the following locations so that he could see and smell Mt. Suribachi one more time?

Answer: Iwo Jima

This is an aerial photo of an island known today as Iwo To. At one time it was known as Iwo Jima and it was home to one of the most brutal battles of World War II. The light colored area on the left of the photo is Mount Suribachi. It is the location of the American flag raising that was memorialized by war photographer Joe Rosenthal.

The mountain derives its name from the Japanese word for a grinding bowl. Many who visit Iwo Jima for what ever reason will remark about the strong sulfur smell that permeates the island.
8. My parents are visiting a location that has fairy pools, the Old Man of Storr, and the Neist Point Lighthouse as places of interest. Where are they?

Answer: Isle of Skye

The Old Man of Storr is located on the north of Skye in the area known as 'Trotternish'. The start of the walk is by the main road from Portree to Staffin. Neist Point is one of the most famous lighthouses in Scotland and can be found on the most westerly tip of Skye near the township of Glendale.

While the walk down is an easy one, the concrete path does get quite steep at times. From the path you will see stunning views of the high cliffs and the lighthouse itself, at sunset the view is made even more spectacular making this a top destination for landscape photographers.
9. If I am hiking the terrain of the McMurdo Dry Valleys, to which of the following locations have I decided to take my summer vacation?

Answer: Antarctica

Looking like something you would find on another planet, The McMurdo Dry Valleys are a row of valleys located in Victoria Land, Antarctica. This area contains the Onyx River, the longest river on the continent. The floor of the valley contains a semi-permanently locked lake that has ice several feet thick.

The water underneath is extremely salty and home to very simple organisms which are a subject of study by scientists brave enough to handle the weather. The high winds in the area, as well as the surrounding mountains keep the ground snow and ice free and help keep the humidity at very low levels.
10. To which of these locations would my Uncle Fred travel if he wants to visit the amusement park in Pripyat?

Answer: Ukraine

Located in the Ukraine, the amusement park in Pripyat never opened to the public. Approximately a week before it opened, the Chernobyl Nuclear Accident occurred, just a few miles away. Located inside the prohibited zone of radiation, the park and its rides still stand, never used, as a testament to the 1986 incident.

The few people who have actually seen it describe an aura of sadness around this 'ghost park'.
