Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A horror story or a dream or a movie can be scary. There is also a town named Scary in the United States that a mountaineer may enjoy. Do you know what state it's in?

Answer: West Virginia

Scary is an unincorporated community in Putnam County in West Virginia. It is located at the mouth of Scary Creek. A Civil War battle was fought very close to it in 1861, and was the largest land battle to that point in the War Between the States. Now that must have been scary! West Virginia's motto is "Mountaineers Are Always Free".
2. Trickum and Treat sound like peachy areas to spend Halloween. In fact, you could get to both of these places on October 31st by car, because they are only about 70 miles apart. In what state are these locations?

Answer: Georgia

Trickum is an older name for what is now an unincorporated place in Gwinett County, Georgia, called Mountain Park. The older designation is reflected in Five Forks-Trickum Road which bisects the community. Treat Mountain is located in Polk County. It is very near Cedartown, Georgia. Part of the mountain extends into Alabama. Hunting, particularly wild turkey, is popular around the Treat Mountain area. Georgia is the Peach State.
3. Frankenstein was the name of the doctor who created a monster in the Mary Shelley classic novel. What state has a town named Frankenstein in it?

Answer: Missouri

Frankenstein is an unincorporated community in Osage County, Missouri. The town is named not for the monster but for Gottfried Franken who donated land in 1890 so a church could be built. The community was visited via air in 1999 by 25 skydiving Peter Boyle-style Frankenstein monsters to honor the 25th anniversary of Mel Brooks' movie "Young Frankenstein". Missouri is the Show Me State.
4. I'd expect to encounter "Boos" in a haunted house, but maybe not out on the prairie. Boos, however, really is the name of a location in the United States. Do you know where it is?

Answer: Illinois

Boos is a populated place located in Jasper County. Boos is an unincorporated community in the state of Illinois in the United States. It is located on Illinois Route 130 about six miles southeast of Newton. Boos is a derivation of a Dutch or German word meaning "leader" or "nobleman". Illinois is the Prairie State.
5. Bat Cave: I think we may have found the home of the Caped Crusader. Or maybe not. Bat Cave is actually the name of a place in the US, and there could possibly be the scent of turpentine in the air. Where is it?

Answer: North Carolina

Bat Cave is the name of an unincorporated community in Henderson County, North Carolina. It is close to Asheville. There is a nearby mountain of the same name that is home to flying mammals. The Indiana bat, an endangered species, resides there. The town's bi-weekly newspaper is called "The Bat Biz". North Carolina is the Tar Heel state, possibly owing to its exportation in earlier years of turpentine to other locations.
6. Screamersville is a "loud" location that doesn't need a tyrant to locate. Where in the US is it?

Answer: Virginia

Screamersville is located in Chesterfield County, Virginia. The state capital of Richmond is located about 17 miles to the northwest. There are three major theories about the origins of the settlement's name. The first is that there are a lot of dead residents crying out from their graves.

The second is that a number of former residents did a lot of boisterous partying. The third is that the original citizens had no phones and used to holler at one another from their front porch about the day's news.

A translation of the state motto is "Thus Always to Tyrants".
7. Transylvania is a spooky place in Europe, but is also a community in the United States. I don't know if people with fangs populate this place. However, you may want to go to a parish and say a prayer to ward off vampires in this burg. Where is Transylvania?

Answer: Louisiana

Transylvania was named by a Transylvania University alumnus. Stores in the area do sell Dracula related items. In lieu of counties, Louisiana subdivides by parishes.
8. Slaughter Beach sounds like a bad "slasher" movie. However, it is a very real community in a very small state. Do you know where it is?

Answer: Delaware

Slaughter Beach is located in Sussex County, Delaware. The origins of the name are three-fold, depending on what you want to believe. The first theory is that the town is named after an ex-postmaster. Second, is that the name comes from the horseshoe crabs that beach themselves on the seashore each year and die. Finally, there is the story of a citizen who supposedly used a cannon to annihilate residents to prevent a larger massacre. Delaware was the first state.
9. Suitably, the community of Dead Mans Crossing has twelve cemeteries located within seven miles of its location. Dead Mans Crossing is in a state known as the crossroads for America. What state is this settlement in?

Answer: Indiana

Dead Mans Crossing is an unincorporated community in Posey County, Indiana. The county road adjacent to the community is also known as Cemetery Road. Indiana is known as the Crossroads of America.
10. You can't have a Dead Mans Crossing without a Dead Women Crossing. This place has has had articles written about it, and is reportedly a haunted site. The sooner you answer the question, the better, as this quiz is nearly done. What state is this community in?
