In 1977 I visited Zambia with the United Reformed Church, and fell in in love with Africa. I have been busy scanning my slides before they turn black, and this inspired the quiz. Apologies for the railway questions.

1. The Luapola River marks the border between Zambia and which country?

Answer: Democratic Republic of the Congo.

You have to cross the River Zambesi to get to Angola, Namibia and Botswana. The Luapola is a tributary of the River Congo and it marks the border with Zaire.
2. The River Zambesi marks the southern border of Zambia. Into which ocean does it flow?

Answer: Indian Ocean

Zambia marks the watershed; rivers that rise in Zambia can flow into either the Atlantic or Indian Oceans. The Zambesi flows into the Indian Ocean, where it has its own species of shark.
3. In 1970 a new railway was opened to connect Zambia with the ocean. Where is this harbour?

Answer: Dar es Salaam - Tanzania

The Benguela Railway connected Zambia to Lobito in 1928.
Beira was the original harbour that allowed rail access to the Rhodesias, whilst Nacala provides a rail link to Malawi. The link to Dar Es Salaam opened the door for China to invest in Africa.
4. Which of these lakes is man made?

Answer: Kariba

Lake Mweru is on the Zaire Border, and fed by the Luapola River.
Lake Bangwelu is a National Park.
Lake Tanganyika is part of the Great Rift Valley.
Lake Kariba created in 1958 is a Hydro Electric Lake, with power going to both Zambia & Zimbabwe. 30,000 people were displaced when this lake was created.
5. Zambia's game parks are not as famous as those in Kenya or South Africa; which is the largest of these Zambian Parks?

Answer: Kafue

Kafue is the Largest with an area of 22,000 SqKm. Mosi oa Tunya is the smallest 66 SqKm. Sumbu is on Lake Tanganyika, whilst the Luangwa Valley is two parks, one of which is closed to the public.
6. Copper is one of Zambia's exports. One of copper's ores is malachite. What colour is malachite?

Answer: Green

These are the colours of the Zambian Flag: green represents the land; black the people, Orange its mineral wealth,whilst red is the struggle for freedom.
Malachite is green, and is often used in jewelry.

Answer: Livingstone

The junction was in Livingstone. David Shepherd, the artist, made a documentary about saving stock from this logging railway called "Last Train to Mulobezi". A coach is in the NRM, and locos can be found in Bristol & the Bulowayo Museum. The Zambian Railway Museum in Livingstone, used the ZSR as a basis for its collection.
8. Victoria Falls or Mosi oa Tunya, was created by the Zambesi eroding back through a basalt outcrop. How many previous "Victoria Falls" have there been?

Answer: 6 (six)

There have been six previous falls, the current one is the seventh. These have created the zig-zagging of the gorge.This is best seen from the air. If you look at the falls you can see where the eighth is starting.
9. David Livingstone is buried in Westminster Abbey, London UK. Where is his heart buried?

Answer: Chitambo

Umbopa and Umslopogas, travelled with Allan Quatermain in Rider Haggard's novels, "Allan Quatermain" and "King Solomon's Mines". The Courtneys are a family in the Wilbur Smith sagas. Livingstone died on the night of 30th April 1873. The town was named after the chief of the village where he died.
10. Which of these languages are indigenous to Zambia?

Answer: Bemba & Tonga

Bemba is spoken around Lake Mweru, whilst Tonga is spoken in the south of Zambia. Swahili and Arabic - East African. Xhosa and Zulu are from South Africa, whilst German was spoken by the colonial masters of Tanganyika (prior to 1918), and French in Zaire (called Democratic Republic of Congo since 1997).
