Frank Borman, William Anders and Jim Lovell accomplished this mission with great success.
2. Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee were killed in the Apollo 1 fire. What year did this occur?

Answer: 1967

The tragedy on January 27, 1967 on pad 34 will forever live in our memory. The three men lost their lives during a plugs out test when a frayed wire under Gus Grissom's seat sparked and the pure oxygen in the Command module ignited. Reports later said that the CM door couldn't be opened when they needed to get out.

The door opened to the inside and made it hard for the crew to turn while strapped in their seats. Reports also indicated that the men died of smoke inhalation not burns.

All astronauts are given a silver pin until they fly in space, then they are given a gold one. Slayton died in 1993.
