Mt. Vesuvius erupted on August 24, 79 A.D. killing thousands.

Answer: October 8th, 1871

The fire destroyed 17,450 buildings, caused damages worth $196 million and killed 250 people.

The "Enterprise" disaster left 27 dead and 82 injured. The aircraft carrier "Bennington" exploded and caught fire off of Quonset Point, R.I. on May 26, 1954, killing 103 crewmen. On July 29, 1967 off the shore of North Vietnam, the U.S. carrier "Forrestal" caught fire killing 134.

The "Iowa" was a battleship that had a gun turret explode during a test firing. The incident occured on April 19, 1989.

Ronald Reagan was the one who chose McAuliffe. John Denver went on to write "Flying for me" to tell about his feelings on this tragedy. Sadly, John Denver died in a tragic plane accident on October 12, 1997.
