Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What were the names of the three US carriers?

Answer: U.S.S Enterprise, U.S.S Hornet and U.S.S Yorktown

The USS Enterprise (CV-6) was the only carrier in the battle to survive the war. The Hornet was sunk in the Battle of Santa Cruz Islands, and the Yorktown was sunk in Midway.
2. What were the four Japanese carriers?

Answer: IJN Akagi, IJN Kaga, IJN Soryu and IJN Hiryu

All four carriers were sunk in the Battle by American dive bomber warplanes. The Akagi, Kaga and Soryu were the first to be damaged while Hiryu was untouched by that wave of US planes. The Akagi and Hiryu were sunk later in the battle.
3. What obsolete US planes were retired from the front lines at Midway?

Answer: Douglas TBD Devastator, Vought Vindicator and Brewster Buffalo

The Douglas TBD Devastator was probably the worst plane in the Battle of Midway. It had a crew of 3: a pilot, a bombardier and a rear gunner/radioman, armed with a useless single 30 caliber machine gun. It was succeeded by the Grumman TBF Avenger.
4. In the first US attack B-17 Flying Fortresses took off from Midway Island to bomb the Japanese ships. How many bombs from the B-17s hit their target?

Answer: 0

All the bombs from the bombers missed since the Japanese fleet was battle-hardened from Pearl Harbor experiences and did evasive maneuvers to avoid the bombs. Round 1 to the Japanese!
5. The next US attack was the torpedo run from the flimsy Douglas TBD Devastators and the newer Grumman TBF Avenger torpedo planes. Many of the planes were picked off by Japanese Zeros and anti-aircraft guns. Who was the sole survivor of the USS Hornet's (VT-8) torpedo squadron?

Answer: Ensign George H. Gay

All the Mark 13 torpedoes launched from the planes missed their mark while USS Enterprise's torpedo squadron (VT-6) had 10 of its 14 torpedo planes shot down and Yorktown's torpedo squadron (VT-3) suffered 10 losses out of its 12 planes. Gay was the only survivor of the 30 airmen in Hornet's torpedo squadron. Captain Rafe Mcawley and Lieutenant Red Winkle are characters from the 2001 movie 'Pearl harbor'. Rear Admiral Isacc Kidd was the commander of the USS Arizona.
6. When the torpedo squadrons came in to attack, all the Japanese zeros swooped down to attack them. Completely unaware of the US dive bomber high above. What dive bomber was used by the US in the battle?

Answer: Douglas SBD Dauntless

The Douglas SBD Dauntless was the main plane in the battle. It turned the tide of the war in favor of the US. Ensign George H. Gay was watching the dive bomber attack from the sea. The SBD Dauntless was succeeded by the Curtiss SB2C Helldiver.
7. After the raid by the dive bombers, the IJN Hiryu, the only Japanese carrier left to launch planes, had its own planes take off including Vals (Dive bombers) and Kates (Torpedo bombers/High altitude bombers) to destroy the US carriers. What US carrier did those Japanese planes attack? (Include USS)

Answer: USS Yorktown

USS Yorktown was hit by three bombs and two torpedoes in the attack by the Hiryu. Thirteen Japanese dive bombers, five torpedo bombers and five escorting fighters were shot down trying to attack Yorktown. The damage control on Yorktown was so good that Yorktown was repaired in no time.
8. Now the US launched 24 dive bombers and some Yorktown planes to attack the Hiryu after a Yorktown scout plane located the Japanese carrier. How many bomb hits did they score?

Answer: 4

Most of Hiryu's crew were evacuated to nearby Japanese ships while a Japanese destroyer delivered the coup de grace, but it failed to sink, however it finally sank a few hours later.
9. The last action of the battle was when the Japanese sub I-168 intercepted the US fleet. It fired torpedoes at the crippled Yorktown and scored some hits. But another torpedo hit a US destroyer. What was it?

Answer: USS Hammann

A lone torpedo hit the Sims class destroyer USS Hammann, breaking her in two and taking 80 men with the ship. There were few casualties on Yorktown because the crew had been evacuated. The Yorktown sank after 05:00 on June 7. The destroyers USS Johnston and Hoel were involved in the more recent battle off Samar while USS Samuel B. Roberts was a destroyer escort also involved in the battle off Samar. All 3 ships were in the small task force Taffy 3.
10. How many US casualties were there in the battle?

Answer: 307 sailors and airmen

The US lost two ships, the USS Yorktown and USS Hammann. They also lost 109 planes.
