1. On 10th May 1940 the Germans invaded the Netherlands with airborne troops and ground forces. Which two modern types of aircraft did the Luftwaffe engage over the country?

Answer: Fokker G1A and Fokker D XXI

The G1A was a modern twin engined fighter with eight machine guns in the nose and a rear turret with machine guns. The D XXI was a modern single engined fighter which was armed with four 7,9mm machineguns.
There were too few modern Dutch fighters to make a great impact on the Luftwaffe.
2. Most of the pupils of the Dutch flying schools at the airfields of Vlissingen and Haamstede escaped. By which route?

Answer: By land through Belgium and France

About 80 pupils reached Britain via France. About half were sent to to the Dutch East Indies to continue their training. The most advanced pupils went into the Dutch Naval Airforce and some joined to the RAF.

Answer: 320 Squadron

This was the first Dutch Squadron organised under RAF control. The 320th Squadron was made up of flyers of the Dutch Naval Air Service. They started out with eight Fokker T8W seaplanes and later got some Avro Ansons.

Answer: 321 Squadron

321 Squadron was formed with pilots and aircrew from the Dutch Naval Air Service. It operated with Avro Ansons from June 1940 till 18th January 1941, when it merged with 320 Squadron due to lack of replacement crew.

167 Squadron gained an increasing number of Dutch pilots from July 1942, and in 1943 it was decided to reform the squadron as a Dutch fighter squadron.

Burgwal flew with 322 Squadron and was the top scoring Dutch ace. He was an ace V-1 killer with 23 victories. He was killed in action on 12th August 1944.

Answer: Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema

He was involved in the Dutch student resistance in 1940/1941, then he escaped to Britain on a Swedish merchantship. There he became an agent and was sent back to the Netherlands to establish contact with the resistance. He barely escaped alive. In 1942 he went to flying school and in 1944 he was assigned to 139 Squadron and flew 72 Pathfinder missions. He was awarded the DFC.

The Dutch film "Soldaat van Oranje" was released in 1977.

Answer: 110

The success against the V-1 came at a price for the pilots. They could not participate in the invasion of France. They only returned to the Continent in August 1944.
9. Which Dutch flyer was one of the prisoners that escaped successfully in the Great Escape from Stalag Luft III on 24th March 1944 ?

Answer: Bob van der Stok

He was a resistance fighter who escaped to Britain and joined the RAF. He had six victories before being shot down in 1942 during an air combat with a Fw 190. He escaped from Stalag Luft III and reached Britain via Spain.
10. 322 Squadron had an animal in the Squadron logo. Which of these was it?

Answer: African Grey Red Tail Parrot

Polly Grey was a parrot which was bought by a Dutch pilot in London and became the centerpiece of the Squadron logo.
