Titus Pullo and Lucius Vorenus were both vying for appointment as a senior centurion. When Pullo jumped down from the ramparts to engage the Gauls by himself, a dart stuck into his scabbard, preventing him from drawing his sword. Vorenus then leaped into the fray, killing a Gaul before he himself tripped and landed in a ditch.

Then Pullo came to Vorenus' rescue, and both made it back over the wall, to the cheers of the Roman soldiers.
