Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Man in the Iron Mask" was the name given to a prisoner who was arrested in 1669 or 1670. What was the name on the papers admitting him to prison?

Answer: Eustache Dauger

One suggestion has been that Eustache Dauger (full name Eustache Dauger de Cavoy) was the true identity of the prisoner. However, that is impossible as there is proof that he died in the Prison Saint-Lazare, an asylum run by monks. Also, at the time that "The Man in the Iron Mask" was first imprisoned, Dauger de Cavoye was already at Saint-Lazare in Paris.
2. Throughout his many years in prison "The Man in the Iron Mask" had the same jailer. What was his name?

Answer: Benigne Dauvergne de Saint-Mars

The other three options were all experts in Natural history. Saint-Mars died on 18 September 1708.
3. In which prison was "The Man in the Iron Mask" first held?

Answer: Fortress of Pignerol

Pignerol, now Pinerolo, is a town and comune in north-western Italy, 40 km south west of Turin. It was finally returned to Savoyan in 1696.
4. In 1675 "The Man in the Iron Mask" was given a job that was later used as evidence to disprove any Royal connections. What job was it?

Answer: Relief valet

Nicolas Fouquet, Marquis of Belle-Île was never expected to be released, so would never be in a position to reveal the true identity of his relief valet.

The conspiracy theorists have suggested that the prisoner was a member of the Royal family, but the argument against this is that no member of the Royal family would be put under the direct control of another prisoner in a servile position.
5. In 1681, "The Man in the Iron Mask" was taken to a different prison by his jailer. It was during the journey to the next prison in 1687 that which rumours started?

Answer: The prisoner was wearing an Iron Mask

The prisoner actually wore a mask of black cloth, probably velvet. It is not known how the rumour started, but it caught the imagination of the public and the conspiracy theories started.
6. On 18 September 1698, "The Man in the Iron Mask" was moved, for the final time, to which famous French prison?

Answer: Bastille

The Bastille was also the final posting for the jailer of "The Man in the Iron Mask" who was imprisoned for 34 years.
7. The prisoner died on 19 November 1703 and was buried the next day. What name was buried with?

Answer: Marchioly

"Mon fils" is French for "my son", "trésor" means "treasure" and monarque is "king or monarch".
8. The facts that are known about "The Man in the Iron Mask" are based mostly on letters from his jailer. The jailer knew the true identity of his prisoner.

Answer: False

In July 1669 the jailer received a letter telling him to expect a new prisoner and to prepare a special cell. It was to be a "cell within a cell" to minimise contact with anyone. The prisoner was to be seen only once a day and would not be allowed to talk of anything other than his personal needs.
9. What is the name of the French author mostly associated with "The Man in the Iron Mask" through the movies of the same name?

Answer: Alexandre Dumas

The Vicomte of Bragelonne was a novel in three parts by Alexandre Dumas pere. "The Man in the Iron Mask" was the third part.
10. Who of the following has *NOT* been suggested as the true identity of "The Man in the Iron Mask"?

Answer: King Louis XIV

The Italian Count Ercole Antonio Mattioli was only in two of the prisons at the same time as "The Man in the Iron Mask".

The English Duke of Monmouth was an illegitimate son of Charles 11. He led a Protestant rebellion against his uncle, the Catholic King James II. Monmouth was executed in 1685, but one author claimed that a supporter died in his stead. Another suggested Englishman was Richard Cromwell, a son of Oliver Cromwell, who had ordered the execution of King Charles I.

There are a great variety of theories that suggest the prisoner was related to the Royal family in some way.
