1. What happened to the Captain and crew of the Restoration after it docked in New York?

Answer: They were arrested

A law was passed in 1818 limiting how many people you could have on a ship per tonnage of the ship, having regard to any cargo. There were 3.2 tons of Swedish iron that was to be sold when they arrived, but according to the law, they were only supposed to have 16 people aboard the vessel. The Captain and crew were put in jail in New York City.

Answer: They were pardoned

A petition written by Lars Larson and some of the other men aboard made its way to the President. Later, the captain and crew were pardoned by John Quincy Adams but no one knows what became of them.
3. From New York City the group traveled to Albany up the Hudson River aboard which form of transportation?

Answer: A Fulton steamboat

The fee to ride the steamboat was $6 and was covered by local Quaker families. It was the first time any of them had been aboard this type of transportation.

In 1825, Orleans County, New York was a young county compared to the eastern area of New York. Holley was a small community, but would grow due to the Erie Canal.

Along the way, the Sloopers docked at Rochester, or Rochesterville as it was known then, and were allowed to view the city. They were greeted by cannon fire, which was to celebrate the opening of the Erie Canal. A cannon went off in every city along the canal in succession to celebrate the opening.

As the Governor passed by the Sloopers' barge, which was tied off to the side to allow the Governor's barge to pass, The Norwegians lined the side of the barge and offered an American greeting to the Governor for which he thanked them.

Answer: Eleazer Cary Stangland

All were children of Andreas and Susan but Eleazer was the first. He went on to study medicine at Brockport College and became a surgeon. He served with the 16th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War as the 1st Assistant Surgeon.

The land in Illionis where the Sloopers ventured to was named the Fox River Settlement. Most of the Sloopers left New York in the hope of finding better farm land.

All but six left for Illinois including Andreas Stangeland. One of the families who decided to stay, the Harwick family became very well to do.

He sold his 48 acres to a man named Ole Orsland who gave him his farm with 500 acres and a home in Indiana plus $200 as well. Orsland supposedly built a huge house in Indiana for 20 Norwegian workers who were coming over but they never arrived, so he passed the house and land on to Andreas. The land turned out to be swampy and useless, only about 50 to 100 acres were farmable.

Answer: Norway Road

The road is called Norway Road, runs from NY Route 104 over the Lake Ontario State Parkway and right up to the shore of Lake Ontario. The home of the Cary family still exists along with the log cabin built by the Stanglands. Many of the homes built by the Norwegians are still standing. A monument stands at the end of Norway Road in their honor.
