Answer: Emancipation Proclamation

Abraham Lincoln issued this declaration at the end of the American civil war freeing all slaves across the nation.
2. January 3rd- Which important figure in religion was excommunicated on this day?

Answer: Martin Luther

Martin Luther was excommunicated on 1521, further widening the split in Western Christianity.
King Henry was the only one of the other options also excommunicated; he did prove important to religion but was excommunicated on another day.
3. January 6th- The birth of a woman touched by God?

Answer: Joan of Arc

Joan believed she was touched by God and fought with and led the French in the Hundred Years' War with England.
4. January 10th- This river was crossed in defiance of the Roman Senate.

Answer: Rubicon

Julius Caesar crossed this river with a few of his legions and began the Roman civil war, which he won.
He never became emperor though. He was named dictator for life of the Roman Republic.
5. January 18th- Which islands were discovered by Captain James Cook on this day?

Answer: Hawaii

James Cook also visited all those other places but he landed there on different days. 1769-New Zealand 1770-Australia 1777-Fiji. (He didn't discover New Zealand but was the first European to return to Europe with news on it. A Dutch crew captained by Willem Janszoon sighted Australia in 1606 but did not land there).
6. January 20th- This island was ceded to the British Empire on this day.

Answer: Hong Kong

After a naval war with China, in which the Chinese navy was destroyed by the modern British guns. The island of Hong Kong was ceded to Britain. It later grew into one of the greatest trading posts in the Empire. In 1997 the island was given back to China as a Special Administrative Region, SAR.
7. January 22 1666- The emperor who ordered the construction of the Taj Mahal died on this day.

Answer: True

He was imprisoned by his third eldest son Aurangzeb, because he wanted to inherit the throne. He built the Taj Mahal as a mausoleum to honour his dead wife Mumtaz Mahal.

Answer: Al Capone

Al Capone died in Florida after being locked in Alcatraz prison, San Francisco for many years. Funnily enough he wasn't caught for the Valentine's day massacre or his other crimes but for tax evasion.
9. January 28th- True/False: Charlemagne died.

Answer: true

Charlemagne was the first Holy Roman Emperor though there is some debate as to whether he was the first emperor. He was a Christian throughout his life and died this day at the age of 71.
10. January 30th- On this day the battle of Waterloo began, which ended in Napoleon's historic defeat.

Answer: False

The battle of Waterloo began on the 15th of June 1815 when the French attacked allied outposts of the Seventh Coalition.
On this day, 1649- King Charles I of England is tried and beheaded. 1882- Birth of American president Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 1933- German dictator Adolf Hitler assumes power.
