What Happened on June 16th? (Mainly American) Quiz

I was curious about other lesser events on June 16. I mean, June 16 was the day of my birth; to me it doesn't get more important than that. Without that event, I wouldn't get to make quizzes like this one!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. June 16, 1890: Arthur Stanley Jefferson is born. He would later go on to be a member of one of the greatest comedy teams in history, after altering his name for stage and screen. What was this great comedy team?

Answer: Laurel and Hardy

Stan Laurel was the more "lithe" of the two in the group. Born in Lancashire, England, Stan got his early start understudying for the great Charlie Chaplin. He went on to work with Oliver Hardy for nine years during the 20s and 30s.
2. June 16, 1903: A major car company in the United States announces its incorporated status. Which car company made this business move?

Answer: Ford

Ford became 'official' in 1903, the same year Buick did, about one month apart. GM came into existence in 1908, Chrysler in 1925. Oldsmobile was already in existence in the United States, having started in 1897.
3. June 16, 1930: Ezra Fitch dies. Ezra spent his early years as a prominent lawyer in NYC, but his name will forever be linked to what?

Answer: Clothing Stores

Ezra Fitch joined David Abercrombie and his store, already opened in 1892 named Abercrombie Co., was renamed Abercrombie & Fitch Co. in 1900. The store has continued to enjoy major success, especially with the teenage and college crowd. One is not sure whether Ezra Fitch would approve of the modern catalogs!
4. June 16, 1948: Cathay Pacific Airways' seaplane, "Miss Macao", is the first commercial plane to feature what?

Answer: A skyjacking

While there had been skyjackings of military aircraft previous to this, the first commercial aircraft skyjacking occurred on this date. This skyjacking was unsuccessful in every sense of the word, as the hijackers killed the co-pilot when he refused to move from his seat.

Then when the pilot came back from an overhead dome to see the commotion, the hijackers killed him as well. The pilot fell on the controls, and the plane nosedived into the ocean, killing all but one on board.
5. June 16, 1959 and June 16, 1996: Two men die on these dates, George Reeves and Curt Swan, respectively. George and Curt have a link to a particular fictional character. What character is their common bond?

Answer: Superman

George Reeves played Superman for eight years in the 1950s on television show "The Adventures of Superman". He died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, though there are conspiracy theories that dispute this.

Curt Swan was a long time illustrator for the "Superman" comic during the "Silver Age of Comics". He started in 1948, and continued to work into the 1980's, occasionally coming back for small projects beyond that. His final "Superman" project was published posthumously in 1996.
6. June 16, 1963: A date forever linked to Valentina Tereshkova. What happened to her on this date?

Answer: She was launched into space.

Tereshkova was one of five women to get selected for the Soviet female space program, and was the first of the five to get launched into orbit, thereby being the first woman into space. She spent three days in space, orbiting Earth 48 times. As for the other answers, all information is completely made up.
7. June 16, 1967: The Monterey Pop Festival begins in Monterey, CA. The first major music festival featuring acts from many different genres of music, it runs for three days. Which of these did NOT perform in the festival?

Answer: Cream

The pop fest brought in over 200,000 people for the three days, making it highly successful and forming a model for events similar in the future, including Woodstock. The three performances of Hendrix, Joplin, and The Who were historic, as it was the first major appearance in the States for Hendrix and The Who, and a major unveiling for Janis and Big Brother and the Holding Company. Cream was asked to perform, but their manager wanted to make a bigger opening in America. Apparently 200,000 people wasn't enough for him.
8. June 16, 1970: Brian Piccolo dies. Brian's heroic journey fighting cancer was immortalized in the TV movie "Brian's Song". Who played Brian in the movie?

Answer: James Caan

Brian didn't have a storied career in the NFL, largely playing backup to the ridiculously talented Gale Sayers. But Gale and Brian were good friends and roomed together according to the movie. The movie was so successful on television that it was later released in theatres.
9. June 16, 1970: Tupac Shakur is born. Gaining fame as a rap MC, Tupac was gunned down on a Las Vegas street in 1996, dying in a hospital a few days later. Another rap star was similarly gunned down in 1997, the event later linked to Shakur allegedly as retaliation for Tupac's murder. What rapper is tragically linked to Tupac Shakur in the annals of music history?

Answer: The Notorious B.I.G.

Tupac is credited as being the first to release a rap double-album, selling over 9 million copies of "All Eyes on Me". Though much evidence shows neither Tupac nor B.I.G. were responsible for the other's death, there are still those that wonder, as the two are eerily similar.
10. June 16, 1977: Kerry Wood is born. Kerry Wood has made a nice living as a Major League Baseball player. In 1998, he joined Roger Clemens in the Baseball Record Book by doing what?

Answer: Striking out 20 players in one 9-inning game.

Kerry Wood, in only his fifth career start, struck out twenty, allowing no runs and only one hit. While Roger Clemens has done this feat twice, and Randy Johnson once (Randy was taken out after nine innings and a tie game, so he didn't get the win), neither had as dominating a performance as Woods' near perfect gem.

Some baseball historians list Kerry's game in the list of most dominating one-day performances in baseball history.
