Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In order to win the game, how many colonies must a player establish on planets outside of his/her own solar system?

Answer: 5

Each player begins play with twenty ships, distributed evenly among the five planets in his/her home solar system. In order to win the game, a player must establish five colonies on planets in the other players' solar systems.
2. When a player loses a battle, his/her ships involved in the battle are sent to the Warp. Under normal conditions, these ships are permanently eliminated from the game.

Answer: False

Although ships defeated in battle are sent to the Warp, these ships are only temporarily unavailable. Ships can be retrieved gradually (e.g., one ship per offensive turn) or suddenly (e.g., by playing a "Mobius Tubes" card).
3. What happens when a player is reduced to control of two or fewer "home" planets?

Answer: the player temporarily loses his Alien Power

A player must maintain ships on at least three of his/her five home planets to continue using his/her Alien Power. Players can attempt to recapture lost home planets in order to regain use of their Alien Power.
4. Instead of dice, battles are resolved using Attack Cards (a.k.a. Challenge Cards). Each player adds the value of his/her Attack Card to the number of ships on his/her side (including allies). However, one Alien Power allows the player to MULTIPLY the Attack Card by the number of ships. Which Alien Power is this?

Answer: Virus

The power to multiply makes Virus a dangerous opponent. Macron has the power of size (=each ship counts as four ships when involved in battle). Empath has the power of compromise (=when Empath plays a Compromise Card, it automatically changes his/her opponent's Attack Card to a Compromise Card as well). Rabbit is not a real power.
5. During a player's offensive turn, the player can normally make no more than two attacks before play passes to the opponent on his left. However, one Alien Power allows the player to continue his/her offensive turn until out of Attack and Compromise Cards. Which Alien Power is this?

Answer: Machine

Void has the power to annihilate (=opponent's ships defeated in battle are permanently removed from the game, rather than sent to the Warp). Brat has the power to throw tantrums and is a new power developed for the online version of the game. Robot is not a real power.
6. Several expansion kits created additional Alien Powers, playing cards, and miscellaneous supplements for the game. For example, one expansion kit introduced currency to the game. What was the official name for this currency?

Answer: Lucre

Players can use Lucre to purchase things during the game. For example, a player can purchase additional playing cards or retrieve additional ships from the Warp.
7. In a hypothetical battle, Virus attacks Macron. Virus attacks with four ships, and Macron has four ships stationed on the planet under attack. Neither player invites allies for this battle. Virus plays a '10' Attack Card, and Macron plays a '30' Attack Card. Macron defeats Virus in this battle.

Answer: True

Both Virus and Macron have special powers in battle; see Question 4 above for a description.

The attack total for Virus = Attack Card x no. of ships.

The attack total for Macron = Attack Card + (4 x no. of ships).

Thus, Virus has an attack total of 40 ('10' x 4). Macron has an attack total of 46 ('30' + 16).
8. In addition to Attack Cards, there are several other types of playing cards. Edict Cards (also known as Artifacts) are "special" cards that can often be played by players not directly involved in a battle. Which of the following is NOT a type of Edict Card?

Answer: Kicker

Kickers (included in a later expansion kit) were for use by the main players involved in a battle to increase the value of an Attack Card. Kicker cards had values ranging from 0 to 4. When played in combination with an Attack Card, the value of the Kicker was MULTIPLIED by the value of the Attack Card.

For example, if a player used a '15' Attack Card and a '2' Kicker, his/her Attack Card became a '30'.
9. At the beginning of each offensive turn, how does the offensive player determine which opponent to attack?

Answer: By flipping over the top disc of the Destiny Pile

The Destiny Pile contains colored discs corresponding to the different solar system colors. The color of the revealed disc indicates which solar system the offensive player must attack. The offensive player, however, is free to choose which particular planet in the solar system to attack.

In addition, if a player's own solar system is revealed by the Destiny Pile, he can choose to flip the next disc in the Destiny Pile until an opponent's solar system is indicated.
10. In the current version of the game (distributed by Avalon Hill), what is the highest Attack Card in the deck?

Answer: 40

Note that if Kickers are being used in a game (see Question 8), the value of a '40' Attack Card can be increased.
