Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The cross stitch instructions say you will get an 11x14 picture if you use 14 count cloth. You want 11x14 but want a smaller stitch. Which count gives you the same size as a 14 count picture?

Answer: 28 count (over 2)

28 count is equivalent size as 14 but has a much tighter weave. It's usually a linen vs. aida cloth.
2. Which is NOT a floss brand?

Answer: Smiths

While DMC is the most common floss brand, most designs will also list numbers for Anchor and J & P Coats.
3. What is the official color description for DMC's No. 666?

Answer: Bright Red

Because of the brightness of the red, 666 is used often in Christmas pictures.
4. What stitch are you most likely doing if you are shading?

Answer: 1/2 stitch

1/2 stitch is one line of the full X in a cross stitch and will give the picture a slight shading effect when used. 1/4 and 3/4 are used to create angles.
5. Which stitch listed is not a valid stitch?

Answer: Stretch Stitch

Longstitch stretches over multiple holes, a lazy daisy creates an elongated circle and a seed stitch is similar to a 1/4 stitch but comes up and goes down through the material, not a hole.
6. In every how-to book for cross stitch, how do they say to end a floss thread?

Answer: Run the thread under several stitches before cutting remainder off

They say NEVER EVER knot it! It will show through. However, I have knotted since I started cross stitching and I have yet to have one "show" through...and it holds it a lot better, especially if the design is going to be worn and washed.
7. Embellished cross stitch is where you must fill in every square of the fabric

Answer: False

In fact, embellished cross stitch has very little actual cross stitch. Most of the picture is painted on the canvas with cross stitch used to highlight the picture.
8. If you want to cross stitch a design onto a sweatshirt, what type of cross stitch fabric should you use?

Answer: Waste Canvas

Waste canvas, when soaked in water, will loosen so that you can pull it out of the design string-by-string. All you are then left with is the design on the shirt.
9. When framing a cross stitch picture, what is needed that is not needed when framing any standard photo picture?

Answer: Stretching

Stretching is the process of pulling the cloth tight over a wooden frame. Incidentally, professionals (and I agree) say non-glare glass should not be used for cross stitch. It blurs the individual stitches together, taking away the uniqueness of cross stitch.
10. How many strands are in standard embroidery floss?

Answer: 6

The smaller the cloth count, the more strands a design usually requires.
