Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. All of the paintings featured in the game of Masterpiece are on display at which famous museum?

Answer: The Art Institute of Chicago

The museum was originally built in 1893. It has on display some of the greatest Impressionist and American paintings ever created. These include Grant Wood's "American Gothic" and Edward Hopper's "Nighthawks," both of which appear in the game. Along with paintings, the museum also features architectural miniatures and Medieval armaments.
2. In Masterpiece, you play the role of one of six fictitious art speculators complete with colored playing piece and biography card. Which of the following is not one of the speculators?

Answer: Prince Al-Haji Sheik

Along with the three mentioned, there are "Bitsy" Rich Wong Dobrowski Keyes, Baron Dietrich von Oberlitzer, and V. Elton Whitehall Esq. These were included for comedic effect, because they have no real bearing in the game.
3. The board has a circular track. After the dice roll a player can move in either direction.

Answer: True

The circular track design takes into account that there are no real start and finish spaces. Beginning the game a player is allowed to place his/her piece anywhere on the track. The ability to go either way gives the game a little more variety.
4. Each time a painting is purchased from the bank, a value card is attached to the back of it. In the original game, these values range from the highest--$1 million--to the lowest. What is the lowest value (a name rather than a number) a painting can have?

Answer: Forgery

There are two Forgery cards in the value card deck. If you get stuck with a painting having a Forgery card it becomes worthless, even if there are other value cards on it. Paintings can have as many value cards affixed as the owner of the painting desires.
5. At the beginning of the game each player receives one painting and value card from the bank for free, along with his/her starting 1.5 million in money. The only other way to get a free painting is by landing on the "Inherit A Painting From The Bank" space. What color is this space?

Answer: Yellow

It's the only such space on the board. One of the strategies at the beginning of the game is to place your playing piece six, seven or eight spaces away from the free painting space. Those three rolls are the most common with two dice.
6. Auctioning is a big part of Masterpiece. The player landing on a Bank Auction space becomes the auctioneer for the next painting on the pile. He/she must start the bidding at no less than what figure?

Answer: $100,000

Players who win the auction won't know the actual value of the painting until after the auction is over, and a value card is drawn with the painting. After the minimum opening bid, players may bid any amount including the lowest increase of $50,000. The auctioneer may also participate in the auction.
7. When Masterpiece was first released, what was the name of the company that released it?

Answer: Parker Brothers

Parker Brothers published the game in 1970. During the 1980s they were merged with Kenner. In 1991 the company was bought by Hasbro.
8. If a player overbids--bids more than the amount of money he/she has--the penalty is $100,000. If the player overbidding doesn't have $100,000, what is the penalty?

Answer: They lose their next turn.

However, if the overbid goes unnoticed until after the winning bidder pays for the painting, the overbidder gets off scot free. The winning bid stands unless the winner has insufficient funds, then they are penalized the same way and the bid is done over.
9. You can borrow money from the bank only if you have sufficiently-valued paintings to meet the loan.

Answer: False

In Masterpiece, bank loans are never allowed. Players who run out of money have to hope they can acquire a free painting as described before, or sell one of their paintings to the bank or at auction according to the space they land on.
10. There are several spaces on the board that allow a player to "unload" a valueless painting. Which of the following is NOT such a space?

Answer: Sell a painting to the player on your left for $250,000

Selling a painting with a Forgery value card on it to a player who already knows it's a forgery can provide some pretty tense moments. Private auctions can be fun because the player to the left selects the painting to be auctioned from the collection of the player landing on the space. If he/she selecting doesn't know its value, it could end up being an unfortunate purchase.
