Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The white flowers of this plant changed color when the Virgin Mary spread her cloak over it.

Answer: Rosemary

During the flight to Egypt, tradition has it that Mary spread her cloak over the rosemary bush to make a shelter, and the white flowers turned blue.
2. The golden petals of this humble plant can be used in the place of more expensive saffron in cooking:

Answer: marigold

Also known in some varieties as "Calendula", it can be used as a dye, and is often found in herbal cosmetics. Be advised - there are different varieties of marigolds, but I have actually used the petals of the so-called garden marigold (Tagetes) to good effect as well.
3. The fresh scent of lavender implies it helps with cleanliness. Which of these is it used for?

Answer: All of these.

Lavender is one of the gentlest herbs, and can be brewed into a relaxing tea; the flowers can be put into potpourris and sleep pillows. It's also a most beautiful bush, and bees love it!
4. The Biblical balm of Gilead is likely which one of these?

Answer: Commiphora opobalsamum

All three plants listed above are known as "balm of Gilead" because of the strong aroma, or their medicinal uses. Commiphora opobalsamum is believed to be the plant gifted by the biblical Queen of Sheba to Solomon..
5. Wreaths were made of these leaves for heroes, athletes, rulers.

Answer: bay

Bay is also known as Laurel. The large, aromatic leaf exudes a pleasant smell - perfect for a wreath to be placed on the brow of a VIP. It also exudes a lovely taste in stews.
6. Woad, the plant which produces a blue dye which was believed to be used by combatants in the British Isles as a face paint, is a member of the same plant family as cabbage, broccoli and Brussels sprouts.

Answer: True

It is, in fact, a member of the same Family, Brassicaea, although not as a food plant. There is also question as to whether or not this is actually the plant used for the bright blue face adornment made famous in the movie "Braveheart".
7. Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and what herb finishes this foursome?

Answer: thyme

Thyme is the 4th member of this famous quartet, made famous by Simon & Garfunkel. The refrain comes from the traditional English song, "Scarborough Fair".
8. Ouzo, the Greek aperitif, is flavored primarily with what?

Answer: anise

Anyone who has ever enjoyed a shot of Ouzo can tell you it has a very strong licorice flavor - a sure sign of anise.
9. Curled, French, Italian, Hamburg - these are types of what common herb?

Answer: parsley

Parsley - that little bit of green that garnishes your dinner plate, and that is usually left behind, is actually one of the most powerful herbs. It is rich in vitamins and minerals, as well as being packed with chlorophyll, an antiseptic and deodorant. Chew it up after you've cleaned the rest of your plate, and give your digestion a kickstart!
10. Coriander, cardamom, turmeric, cumin, and fenugreek combine to make what?

Answer: curry powder

A basic curry powder will just be coriander, turmeric, cumin and fenugreek. Cardamoms, ginger, fennel seed, garlic, nutmeg, cinnamon can also be included, and peppers - if it's got a solid flavor, it will just give you another way to flavor your curries. The Chinese 5-spice is the same type of mix - predominantly made with cinnamon, pepper, anise, cloves, and fennel, but additional herbs and spices can be added, or substituted.

Bouquet garni is a bundle of herbs, which can be tied, or gathered into cheesecloth or mesh cloth and placed in a stew or soup to steep and flavor it. It is removed from the final dish. As with the other answers, there are basic herbs included, such as bay leaves, parsley, peppercorns and thyme, but can be substituted or added to.
