Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When you bite into this sweet treat, you get a mouthful of chocolate icing, chocolate cake and creamy filling. They're usually sold two to a package and part of its mascot's name is "Captain". Which delightful snack am I describing?

Answer: CupCakes

Though no one knows for sure who actually invented Hostess Cupcakes in 1919, D.R. "Doc" Rice is credited for adding the swirl of white icing to the top of them in 1950. Originally a chocolate cupcake, a "golden" cupcake was released in 1999.
2. These chocolate cakes have been known as "King Dongs", "King Dons" and even "Big Wheels". Miniature cakes covered in a chocolate coating with a dab of cream filling, one might mistake these tasty treats as a hockey puck! What are these snacks I am describing?

Answer: Ding-Dongs

Released in 1967, the name "Ding-Dongs" was derived from the sound of a ringing bell heard in some of the very first Hostess commercials. Ding-Dongs' mascot was known as "King Ding Dong". In parts of the country where they were sold as "King Dons", the mascot was named "King Don" and in areas of the country where they were sold under the name, "Big Wheels", the mascot's name was "Chief Big Wheel".
3. These ball-like chocolate cakes have a cream filling and a marshmallow coating that's sprinkled with coconut. The coconut is colored for certain holidays! What snack is this?

Answer: Sno-Balls

Invented in 1947, Sno-Balls are chocolate cakes, covered in marshmallow and coconut. The cream filling was added in 1950 and soon after, pink coloring was added to the coconut. Hostess releases white Sno-Balls around the Christmas holidays, orange at Halloween (known as "Glo Balls"), green for St. Patrick's Day (known as "Lucky Puffs") and lavender, (known as "Hoppers") just for spring!.
4. In between two rectangle-shaped chocolate cake treats is a sweet cream filling. Sometimes females are given this nickname, (usually if their name sounds the same as this product). Do you know what snack I'm referring to in this question?

Answer: Suzy Q's

Named after the daughter of the VP of the Continental Baking Company, Cliff Isaacson, Suzy Q's were created in 1961. The cakes are also sold with a devil's food and banana flavoring.
5. These chocolate coated sponge cakes with creamy filling pack a bite! Perhaps they're a long lost cousin of the "Twinkie"! Even though they're no longer sold all over the United States, there are some factories on the West Coast that still create them. Can you choose the correct name for these little "creatures"?

Answer: Chocodiles

"Chocodiles" once had a mascot named "Chauncey Chocodile", but he was removed from packaging as well as the web site.
6. These sweets are something you need if you want to satisfy your sweet tooth. These aren't your mother's pies. They come in flavors such as: apple, cherry, lemon, and blueberry. What are these pies called?

Answer: Fruit Pies

These pies once had their own little mascot as well! Depending on which fruit filling was inside the pie, the little guy stood next to that particular fruit. He was dressed as a magician, hence his name, "Fruit Pie the Magician". He was the official mascot for 33 years, from 1973 until 2006.
7. This golden sponge "submarine" cake's mascot, is dressed in a cowboy hat, cowboy boots, a kerchief and carries a lasso. What delightful treat am I referring to?

Answer: Twinkies

On April 6, 1930, the "Twinkie" was created. James A. Dewar used pans that were used to bake "Short Cake Fingers", then injected the filling afterwards. Due to a banana shortage, the banana cream filling was replaced with a vanilla cream filling.
Stuck on a name, it wasn't until he drove past a billboard for the "Twinkle Toes Shoes" factory in St. Louis when a friend suggested the name "Twinkle Fingers", which James then shortened to "Twinkies".
In 1947, "Twinkie the Kid" was born. He's a Twinkie, dressed in a ten-gallon hat, a blue kerchief with red hearts on it tied around his neck, cowboy boots, gloves and is sometimes seen with a lasso.
8. These circular gems resemble another mouth-watering treat, with a small difference. Though half the size, they are enough to satisfy anyone's sweet tooth. What are they?

Answer: Donettes

Invented in the 1930s, "Donettes" are basically, mini donuts which are frosted with chocolate, or coated with powdered sugar.
Other great Hostess products are: Honey Buns, Muffin Loafs and Zingers!
9. When you bite into one of these tubular chocolaty treats, the creamy filling inside resembles a pinwheel. What taste bud delight is this snack called?

Answer: Ho Hos

The name "Ho Hos" is a play on the word "Hostess" and laughter, which should let you knows these treats are fun to eat! They were first made in 1967, then in 1999, "Nutty Ho Hos," were introduced and in 2004, "Caramel Ho Hos" were introduced.
10. "Hostess" is the brand that these products are marketed under. Is the company that owns "Hostess" the same company which owns "Wonder Bread"?

Answer: Yes

The Hostess company started off in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1925 and was originally a part of the Continental Baking Company. The CBC then bought a bakery, ("Taggert"), that was making white bread called "Wonder Bread". In 1995, the Interstate Bakeries Corporation bought the CBC but in turn went bankrupt in the early 21st century.
