Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Not all roses which exist in nature are red. Which of these roses is actually a red rose?

Answer: Mr. Lincoln

Mr. Lincoln is a very fragrant red rose. Joseph's Coat is a yellow/orange climbing rose. Fragrant Cloud is a very fragrant coral colored rose. Soaring Spirits is a pink and white striped single rose. All of these are modern roses.
2. Which of these is not considered to be an Old Garden Rose (OGR)?

Answer: Hybrid Tea

Gallica roses have been known since the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans. Noisettes were developed in South Carolina shortly after 1800. Tradition has it that Damask roses were developed in Asia Minor, specifically in the area of Damascus, Syria, and brought to the West by the Crusaders about 1254, although that origin is not certain.

The Hybrid Tea was developed in the late 19th century.
3. Where did the first yellow roses originate?

Answer: Afghanistan and Southwest Asia

The original yellow roses were Rosa Ecae, Rosa Foetida, and Rosa Hemisphaerica. They are wild roses with thorny stems, clear yellow flowers, and a scent that is rather like sulfur. They were bred with western roses and eventually produced the yellow roses that we see today.
4. Roses used to be known to only bloom in the Spring, but in the 19th century something happened that changed that, and roses began to be developed that bloomed repeatedly into Summer and Autumn. What happened to change the blooming habit of roses?

Answer: The crossbreeding of China roses with European variants

China roses, for the most part, had small, relatively unattractive, blooms, but those blooms appeared repeatedly throughout the Spring, Summer, and Autumn. Crossing the China roses with the European roses produced new roses with large attractive blooms that bloomed repeatedly through Spring, Summer, and Fall.
5. Rosa Mundi is a striped mutation of The Apothecary's Rose dating back to the 12th century. It is thought to have been named for Fair Rosamund, mistress of King Henry II. The Apothecary's Rose itself also carries a royal connection in Great Britain. What is that connection?

Answer: It represented the house of Lancaster in the " War of the Roses"

King Henry VII used The Apothecary's Rose overlaid upon Rosa Alba-the white rose of York-to create the Tudor rose, which is still the emblem of England today.
6. One particular thoroughbred horse race is known as "The Run for the Roses". Which race is it?

Answer: The Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby is a 1 1/4 mile race for 3 year olds that takes place at Churchill Downs racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky, on the first Saturday in May.
7. In 2004 a rose was developed to honor the victims of the September 11 World Trade Center attacks. What is the name of that rose?

Answer: Soaring Spirits

Soaring Spirits is a climbing rose with pink blend striped single large blooms. It was developed by Tom Carruth. It is one of the roses featured in the "Remember Me" Rose Gardens.
8. According to history and legend, a woman named Emily West, or Emily Morgan, played a heroic role in the story of the Texas fight for independence from Mexico. She was so important in this fight that a song was written about her. What was the title of the song?

Answer: The Yellow Rose of Texas

Ms. Emily West, an indentured servant of James Morgan, was captured by Santa Anna, but did manage to send word to General Sam Houston that Santa Anna's army was on the way. Santa Anna was quite the ladies' man, so Emily had no problem keeping him occupied while General Houston's army crept up to position for a surprise attack on Santa Anna's forces. Thus, on April 21, 1836, the battle for Texas's independence was won.
9. Sometimes you'll see a rose that looks as if its buds have fur. What kind of rose have you found?

Answer: Moss Rose

A Moss rose is a natural mutation of the Centifolia rose. The Centifolia rose is the classic antique rose that is often seen in 19th century paintings. It is also known as the cabbage rose. The Centifolia, Damask, Hybrid Perpetual, and Bourbon roses are all antique roses dating from the 19th century and earlier. All of these roses are still in cultivation today.
10. One particular color of roses does not occur in nature. For that reason, this color of rose has come to symbolize the mysterious and unattainable. What color is this?

Answer: Blue

The blue rose has never yet been achieved by rose breeders although partial success has recently (2004) been achieved via genetic engineering. The closest roses to blue are the lavender and purple roses. Lavender, orange, and spotted roses all occur naturally.
