Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which was the first 8000 metre peak to be climbed?

Answer: Annapurna

Annapurna (8,091m) was first climbed on June 3, 1950, by a French team nearly three years before Everest was conquered. Shishapangma (8,027m) was the last of the fourteen 8,000m climbed. Its first ascent was in May 1964 by a Chinese team.
2. Who was the first person to climb all 14 8,000 metre peaks in 1986?

Answer: Reinhold Messner

He also achieved this feat without bottled oxygen. In fact, before his ascent of Everest in 1978, it was considered impossible to climb so high (equal to the cruising altitude of a jumbo jet) without the aid of supplementary oxygen. Reinhold and his partner Peter Habaler proved them wrong and made climbing history.
3. He was the first American to climb all 14 8,000 metre peaks, and became the 12th person ever to achieve this feat when he climbed Annapurna in May 2005?

Answer: Ed Viesturs

Ed Viesturs climbed all 14 highest peaks without the use of bottled oxygen, making him only the 5th person to do so.
4. Which of the following five 8,000 metre peaks are located in Pakistan?

Answer: K2, Nanga Parbat, Gasherbrum I, Gasherbrum II and Broad Peak

K2, Nanga Parbat, Gasherbrum I, Gasherbrum II, and Broad Peak are all located in Pakistan, or on the border between China and Pakistan.
5. 11 women have successfully climbed all 14 8,000 metre peaks.

Answer: False

15+ people have performed this dangerous and grueling feat, but none of them women. However, Edurne Pasaban from Spain, Nives Meroi from Italy, and Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner from Austria have all made more than 10 ascents each.
6. Statistically, which is the most deadly 8,000 metre peak?

Answer: Annapurna

Annapurna has a fatality to summit ratio of approximately 40%. Nanga Parbat is statistically the seconed most deadly with a fatality rate of 28% (77% before 1990). K2 is third with roughly 27%. Everest is relatively safe with 9%. The reason Annapurna is such a treacherous climb is the heavy snow accumulation and extreme avalanche danger. K2 and others are arguably still a more technical climb. Cho Oyu is known as one of the most accessible and 'easiest' climbs of the lot.
7. Which of the following is not a climbing feature on K2?

Answer: Cornice Traverse

The Cornice traverse is a knife edge ridge close to the summit on Mount Everest. The bottleneck is the most deadly feature on K2, where climbers have to traverse a 70 degree slope underneath a series of unstable apartment building sized ice towers. In August 2008, one of these towers collapsed, killing 11 climbers.
8. There is an 8,000 metre peak with relatively large deposits of gold and platinum on its summit ridge.

Answer: False

But if there was, I'm sure there'd be much more corporate interest in the sport.
9. There are two broad techniques in high altitude mountaineering. The first is Expedition style, where a large team will incorporate high altitude porters, set up prestocked camps and fix ropes to the mountain. The second general technique involves smaller teams carrying everything they need for their ascnt on their backs, traveling light and quickly, without prestocked camps, porters and fixed ropes. Usually supplementary oxygen isnt used either. What is this self-sufficient style called?

Answer: Alpine Style

Considered the purest form of climbing by many, alpine style was thought to be impossible on the Himalayan giants until legendary climbers like Reinhold Messner and Jerzy Kukuczka proved it was possible in the 1980s. The drawback of alpine style is the lack of protective equipment and supplies in general.

The benefit of this style is less time is spent on the dangerous slopes as repeat trips to stock camps and fix lines are unnecessary.
10. After decades of attempts, which very difficult 8,000 metre peak was finally climbed in winter on Feb 2, 2009?

Answer: Makalu

Makalu is 5th highest mountain in the world (8,485M), and was winter climbed by Italian Simone Moro and Kazakh Denis Urubko on Feb 2, 2009. He made the first winter Ascent of Shishapangma in January 2005. The other two were Poles Jerzy Kukuczka and Krzysztof Wielicki.
