Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "This little boy never felt so happy as when..."

Answer: ...in the street.

This line can be found in the novel: "This little boy never felt so happy as when in the street." Gavroche's sanctuary was the street because his parents did not love him. He was a thinker and preferred the stimulation of the streets over the broken home he could go to.

Although Gavroche did like to sing, he did make trouble, and he did like to be with his friends. You can read more about Gavroche in Victor Hugo's "Les Miserables."
2. How many siblings did Gavroche have in the novel?

Answer: Four

Gavroche had four siblings. Only two of them are named, and these are Azelma and Eponine. There are two other little boys whom the Thenardiers sold to Magnon, who had lost her own children.
3. In the novel, why did Marius want to save Gavroche from death on the barricade?

Answer: He was indebted to Thenardier for saving his father's life

In the novel, Marius respects his father after his father dies and he read in a note from his father that Thenardier had saved him during the Battle of Waterloo. Marius felt that there was a debt to be paid, so he made it his duty to try to get Gavroche out of the barricade.

He sent Gavroche to give Cosette a letter and told Gavroche to stay away from the barricade, but of course Gavroche returns.
4. In which of the following songs does Gavroche NOT have a line by himself?

Answer: One Day More

In "Red and Black" Gavroche announces that Lamarque is dead, in "Look Down" Gavroche introduces himself and the Thenardiers, and in "Little People" Gavroche exposes Javert as a spy. However, in "One Day More," Gavroche does not have any lines in which he sings alone.
5. Around what age is Gavroche?

Answer: Eleven

In the novel, Gavroche is described as being around eleven or twelve years old.
6. In the novel, Gavroche is meant to a cute child who gives comic relief.

Answer: False

While in the musical Gavroche sometimes serves this purpose of comic relief, in the book Gavroche is more of a social statement. Gavroche isn't a cute kid like in the musical, but has potential to become a dangerous citizen when he grows up because he has no parental guidance and he causes mischief in the streets.

He is smart and tough, but at the same time the reader wonders whether Gavroche would have grown up to become a criminal if he had lived.
7. What was Gavroche's last word?

Answer: Grows

Right before Gavroche is fatally shot, he sings, "So you better run for cover when the pup grows-."
8. How many times is Gavroche shot?

Answer: Two

Although you hear three gunshots, Gavroche is only shot twice. The first time there is a gunshot it misses him and only frightens him. He is wounded the second time and is killed with the third shot.
9. Gavroche finds his little brothers and takes care of them.

Answer: True

Gavroche realizes that these two little boys are his brothers, so he shows them where to find shelter in the park and he takes care of them, making sure that they eat.
10. Who played the first English Gavroche?

Answer: Ian Tucker

Ian Tucker was Gavroche in the Original London Cast. Braden Danner was Gavroche in the Original Broadway cast, but he came after Ian Tucker.
