Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You walk past a row of hedges and hear a "tic-tac, tic-tac" sound. You look it up in the field guide and discover that leprechauns make this sound when they are doing what?

Answer: Cobbling shoes

Leprechauns are the shoemakers for the Faeries. They live alone, and know where all the hidden treasures are in Ireland.
2. Again you hear a strange noise, but this long, mournful wail sends a chill through your body. The field guide tells you that this creature has three different names. Which of these would you not call the wailing creature?

Answer: Bean-magahe

Bean-sidhe is the traditional Irish form of her common name, banshee. In some areas of Ireland she is called the bean-chaointe, the washing woman, when she appears to be washing the blood stained clothes of those who are about to die, or the bean-nighe, the keening woman.
3. You wonder what the keening you heard means, and you are shocked to find that the wail means a death is coming - but the faerie only keens for the five major Irish families. What are these families?

Answer: O'Neill, O'Brien, O'Grady, O'Connor, Kavanagh

The banshee's wail is different based on which area in Ireland she's in. In Leinster, she has a glass-shattering wail, in Kerry it is a low, pleasant singing, in Tyrone it's similar to the sound of two boards being struck together, and on Rathlin Island it is a thin shrieking.
4. You catch a glimpse of a dark coach pulled by six black horses. You want to get a closer look, but your field guide warns against it. What will happen if you get a good look at the faerie riding in the coach?

Answer: Blood will be tossed onto your face or one of your eyes will go blind

The dullahan rides in a black coach pulled by six black horses. He is headless, but he carries his head in his arms. When he stops his perpetual journey, a human dies.
5. As you flip through your guide, you come across a section filled with interesting facts. You are informed, "Irial and Niall from Melissa Marr's Tales of Faerie series are both gancanaghs, real Irish faeries." What power do Irial, Niall, and all other gancanaghs possess?

Answer: They make human women addicted to their touch

Melissa Marr's Tales of Faerie (including "Wicked Lovely", "Ink Exchange", "Fragile Eternity", "Radiant Shadows", and "Darkest Mercy") are very factually accurate in relation to faerie mythology. They are a must-read for any faerie or book enthusiast!
6. You pass a woman wailing about a grogoch in her house. How could she get him to leave?

Answer: Call a clergy member into her house

Like many faeries, grogochs are scared of the clergy. They don't mean to cause trouble, but they can quickly become an annoyance.
7. The woman complaining about a grogoch lets you into her house, but you don't see the grogoch. Why is this?

Answer: He turns invisible around strangers

Grogochs, when they are visible, appear as tiny elderly men with reddish fur all over their bodies. They don't wear clothes, but generally have dirt and sticks in their fur from all their travels.
8. You see what appears to be a merrow splashing around in the water. You look up merrows in your guide, and see that the region where she lives would be called what?

Answer: Tir fo Thoinn

Merrows are part of the Tir fo Thoinn, or the Land Beneath the Waves. Aquatic faeries aren't very friendly to humans, and are seen as messengers of doom and death in some parts of Ireland.
9. Your guide tells you that this merrow is probably the female of her species, as males are rarely seen. Which is *not* true about her?

Answer: She longs to live on land and have children with a fisherman

Merrows have a sealskin coat that they must take off to walk on land. If a fisherman takes it and hides it, he can convince the merrow to marry him and have children with him. However, when she find the coat she will leave her family to return to the sea, where she belongs.
10. Your guide tells you that the Irish have a special name for faeries. What is it?

Answer: Sidhe

This covers all faeries, from the grogoch to the beansidhe, and the dullahan to the merrow.
