Go, Go, Go Joseph Trivia Quiz

This is one of my favorite musicals. Questions for this quiz are based on the original Canadian cast recording, and some questions are on how it differs from the Bible story of Joseph. Do you know Joe?

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who plays Joseph in the original Canadian cast recording?

Answer: Donny Osmond

Mr. Osmond is Joseph in the original Canadian cast as well as in the American video. Many of the other characters differ in those two recordings, but he works well with both casts.
2. Which of Jacob's sons is the oldest?

Answer: Reuben

Joseph is actually the second to youngest, as his mother had difficulties having children. Jacob had two wives who bore him children, and also had several children by two of his maidservants.
3. Which of these colors is not listed as being part of Joseph's coat?

Answer: Sienna

Although I don't understand why, being able to name all the colors in the song "Joseph's Coat" seems to be a main point in debates on who is a true fan and who is not. It took me about twenty times of listening to the song to consciously memorize the colors.
It was "Red and yellow and green and brown and scarlet and black and ocher and peach and ruby and olive and violet and fawn and lilac and gold and chocolate and mauve and cream and crimson and silver and rose and azure and lemon and russet and gray and purple and white and pink and orange and blue!"
4. "There's One More Angel in Heaven" is a slow, sad lament on the death of Joseph.

Answer: True

Although in other recordings of the musical that I've heard the song switches tempo as Jacob enters and leaves the stage, in the Canadian recording the entire song is slow and sad. In other versions it speeds up whenever Jacob is offstage, as the brothers are celebrating that Joseph is gone.
5. While Joseph is in prison in Egypt he meets two men. In the musical one is a baker, which corresponds with the Bible. Although the musical calls the other one a butler, the "Jeeves of his time," he is called something different in the Bible. According to Genesis, what is his job?

Answer: Cupbearer

A cupbearer's job was traditionally to taste anything his lord was going to eat to be sure that it was good, and that it wasn't poisoned or something like that.
6. When Pharaoh is singing about his dreams, how many cows does he say he saw?

Answer: 14

Pharaoh saw seven fat cows and seven skinny cows, which Joseph told him meant that Egypt would have seven years of amazing crops, followed by seven years of famine.
7. In "Stone the Crows" Joseph is described as being the greatest man since which Old Testament man?

Answer: Noah

Noah, his sons, and their wives are the only people saved when God sends the flood in Genesis that kills everyone else. He was saved because he was a righteous and good man.
8. Although it's never stated in the musical, the Bible explains why Joseph chose Benjamin as the one to frame for stealing his cup. Why did he choose Benjamin?

Answer: Ben was the only other son of Rachel, his father's favorite wife

In Genesis 42, Benjamin is originally not included when the brothers go to Egypt, as his father is terrified of losing him as he lost Joseph. Joseph has to convince the brothers to bring him. In the Bible, the cup he plants in Benjamin's sack is silver, whereas the musical says it is gold.
9. In the "Joseph Megamix" found on the soundtrack, all of the clips are cut directly from the main songs, there is no editing or rerecording done.

Answer: False

Although most of them are, there are several notable differences. The most obvious is probably in the part cut from "The Brothers Come to Egypt." In the song, the line "If we have the time we could see the sphinx," is sung by only one person and with a slight tempo change, whereas in the megamix it's sung by all of them with no tempo variation.
10. How many times is the phrase "amazing technicolor dreamcoat" used during the musical? (not counting the title)

Answer: 0

Unlike Andrew Lloyd Webber's other Bible-based musical, "Jesus Christ Superstar," there is not a song in "Joseph" with the same name as the title, nor is the title mentioned anywhere in the musical. The closest is in the last song, where it's called the "amazing colored coat."
