Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Les Miserables", which character falls during the mournful duet "A Little Fall of Rain", which she sings with Marius?

Answer: Eponine

Eponine returns to the barricade after delivering a letter to Cosette, despite the danger of the fight, and is shot while pushing Marius out of the way of the bullets. She collapses and Marius sings with her as she dies, finally confessing her unrequited love to him.
2. In "Little Shop of Horrors", the plant Audrey II kills several characters, but no killing song exemplifies the plant's criminal strategy quite like "Suppertime", where it convinces Seymour to kill which unsuspecting character?

Answer: Mushnik

Mr. Mushnik is the florist who owns the shop where Seymour works, and over the course of "Suppertime", the plant convinces Seymour that Mushnik knows too much about their murderous plan. Mushnik needs to go, according to Audrey II, and by the end of the song, Seymour tricks his boss into opening up the plant's man-eating jaws, and stepping inside. "Suppertime" indeed!
3. Which of these songs is not only the name of a musical, but also the name of a title character - who dies *during a song of the same title*?

Answer: Man of La Mancha

Don Quixote, the title character of "Man of La Mancha" (adapted from the Cervantes novel), is gravely ill after emerging from his extended flight of fancy in which he believed he was a knight-errant in the old epic style. He is reminded of his noble intentions by the woman he had pursued in his daze, and sings his title song once more before succumbing to his illness.
4. In the historical epic of a musical "Ragtime", Coalhouse Walker Jr. walks to his death after singing which song that is equal parts rousing and tearful?

Answer: Make Them Hear You

Coalhouse Walker Jr., distraught over the death of his girlfriend (and mother of his son) Sarah, turns against the town that has mistreated him due to his race. He escalates, ending up in New York holding people hostage, where he realizes that he can't turn himself in without being killed in the process. Rather than risk the lives of his men, he decides to face death, and tells his followers to simply spread the word of the injustices done to them.
5. At the opening of "The Scarlet Pimpernel," the Marquis St. Cyr is killed as the peasantry and people assembled sing which Revolutionary song?

Answer: Madame Guillotine

"Madame Guillotine" is the opening song of "The Scarlet Pimpernel", in which the French people lament their downtrodden state under the old regime and the bloody vengeance they have planned in the French Revolution. Meanwhile, their victim cries out in terror, but they are unmoved.
6. The 2006 musical "Spring Awakening" featured a suicide in the melancholic and ironic song "Don't Do Sadness", a duet with Ilsa and which doomed character?

Answer: Moritz

Moritz is the lost and academically inferior student in "Spring Awakening". He works hard with his more bookish friend Melchior and manages to do well on his exams. However, the teachers are determined not to pass him through to the next year, and when his attempt to flee to America doesn't get off the ground, he ends his life.
7. "You Didn't Hear It" is a song in the aftermath of a murder in which musical, whose title character witnesses the murder as a child but is berated into silence about it?

Answer: Tommy

The Who's "Tommy", originally a concept album and then a musical, begins with Tommy's father killing Tommy's mother's paramour. When the parents realize the child was a witness to this death, they tell him "You Didn't Hear It" in a song with grave psychological consequences for their son.
8. "The Judge's Return" is a bloody climax of the very bloody "Sweeney Todd", but only three of the following characters are killed - which does *not* die during this epic finale?

Answer: Toby

Sweeney Todd has been trying to kill the Judge the whole show, and when the Judge returns to Todd's barber shop to find Johanna, Sweeney finally has his chance. He gets his revenge, but then realizes that Mrs. Lovett has withheld information about his wife Lucy being alive, and kills Mrs. Lovett as well. Toby, who went mad after his captivity with the dead bodies, finds Todd and kills him upon realizing that Todd killed Mrs. Lovett.
9. In "1776", a young soldier from the Battle of Lexington delivers letters to Congress, and late in the show is finally caught in conversation with delegate McNair. As he discusses his experience on the battlefield, he mournfully sings from the perspective of a fallen friend named William Pickett. Which song is this?

Answer: Momma Look Sharp

"Momma Look Sharp" is an elegy for a young soldier whose entire experience of the conflict with Britain was on the battlefield. After an entire show of legislators bickering, this provides the perspective of someone who's seen the true price of the arguments.
10. Back to "Les Miserables" - there are many deaths in this delightful and dark show, but which of the following does NOT match a character to the song of their demise?

Answer: "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" - Marius

Marius is one of the very lucky few characters to survive the bloodbath of "Les Miserables". The barricade sequence kills the rest of the barricade boys as well as Eponine and Gavroche, while Fantine and Valjean die before and after the barricade, respectively. Marius does sing "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" in remembrance of his fallen comrades.
