Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the first line (and the first lyric) of the movie?

Answer: The hills are alive

The complete line justifies the title: "The hills are alive, with the sound of music." This scene features Julie Andrews in the breathtaking Austrian Alps.
2. "I go to the hills when my heart is..."

Answer: lonely

Maria is a postulant that is not perfectly suited to the life of a nun. So, as a release, she finds a lot of solace in nature and music.
3. "And underneath her wimple, She has..."

Answer: curlers in her hair

"...I've even heard her singing in the abbey." This is from the song "Maria", which most of the sisters sing with a playful and understanding irritation. But Sister Berthe is not so amused.
4. "And all those children..."

Answer: Heaven bless them

Who can't sympathize? This lyric is from the song "I Have Confidence", which Maria sings from the abbey on her way to the mansion.
5. Who sings the following lyric: "That men will want to write on"?

Answer: Rolf

Before his Nazi days, Rolfe was a sweet teen with all the cares of normal lads (including girls!) This lyric is from the song "Sixteen Going on Seventeen".
6. "These are a few of my favorite things, Cream colored ponies..."

Answer: and crisp apple strudel

This lyric is from the song "My Favorite Things". This is the icebreaker for the children and Maria, and they become fast friends after that. The captain, however, is none too pleased.
7. "Tea, a drink with jam and bread, That will bring us back to Do, Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do, Do Ti La So Fa Mi Re, Do Mi Mi..." (Next three notes)

Answer: Mi So So

This is from the classic children's song "Do-Re-Mi". Maria has assigned each child a note, and, as they ride through town in a carriage, she points to them to create an impromptu song.
8. Who sang the following lyric: "She yodeled back to the lonely goatherd 'Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo'"?

Answer: Brigitta

This lyric is from the song "The Lonely Goatherd", featured in the little entertaining show the kids put on. Besides Maria, only Kurt and Brigitta get solo lines.
9. Yodeling is featured prominently in which song?

Answer: The Lonely Goatherd

One of the most fun songs of the entire movie!

Answer: Liesl

To which her father responds with a quick "No!" This lyric comes from the song "So Long, Farewell".
11. "Climb every mountain, Search high and low, Follow every by-way,..."

Answer: Every path you know

Sister Superior sang this to Maria. Despite the fact that the lyrics to this song repeat, this verse is never repeated. The lyric is taken from the song "Climb Ev'ry Mountain".
12. "For here you are, standing there, loving me, Whether or not you should, So somewhere in my youth..."

Answer: or childhood

An absolutely heartwarming duet between Maria (Julie Andrews) and Captain Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer). This lyric is taken from the song "Something Good".
13. Who does NOT sing the following lyric in the movie: "Edelweiss, Edelweiss, Bless my homeland forever"?

All those listed above sing at the concert before the Von Trapp family flees for Switzerland. The lyric is taken from the song "Edelweiss".
14. Who sings this lyric: "Gone are your old ideas of life, The old ideas grow dim, Lo and behold you're someone's wife"?
