Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. While in Maine, if you're hungry for some hornpout, where would you go?

Answer: Fishing

A hornpout is what you might call a catfish, more specifically a brown bullhead.
2. If you were in someone's dooryard in Maine, where might you be?

Answer: In their yard

The dooryard means the area of the yard immediately outside the door that is most frequently used. Usually, this is the yard outside the front door.
3. What is a tripod of power?

Answer: An old engine block hanging from a chain

Usually an actual tripod with a pulley and chain, and an old engine must be attached or it's not really a tripod of power.
4. When you hear a Mainer refer to The Old Lady, who is he referring to?

Answer: His significant other

The more rural you go, the more often you'll hear this one.
5. Did you know Maine has five seasons, not four? What is Mud Season anyway?

Answer: Spring thaw

It's also been said that Maine only has two seasons, winter and the 4th of July; but it isn't quite that bad.
6. In Maine something or someone described as cunnin' means:

Answer: All of these

And often a combination all at once, especially since cute and clever are often used to mean silly or outsmarting oneself. "Isn't that some cunnin'" is not always a compliment.
7. You're on a rural road in Maine in November following a pickup truck with two gentlemen inside. They're driving rather slow, looking around and wearing orange. What is this activity known as?

Answer: Heater hunting

Essentially your lazy hunters who'd rather stay warm and maybe get lucky than actually going out to hunt. Sorry, you'll never get a man in Maine to admit to male bonding.
8. This one's essential for communication in Maine. What does "ayuh" mean?

Answer: All of these

Although it's simply "yeah" with an accent, it's become a term with many meanings, especially for those of few words. A subtle difference in inflection can change the meaning dramatically. Not for use by those from away.
9. What does a Mainer expect to receive when ordering an Italian?

Answer: Submarine sandwich

Usually consisting of ham, onions, peppers, pickles, cheese with olive oil, salt and pepper. Only your corner store makes it right.
10. The upper east coast of Maine is referred to as?

Answer: Downeast

When sailing east from Boston to Maine, you had the wind at your back or downwind, thus downeast. No real Mainer would confuse Downeast with The County.
