Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What comes next? "This trophy from our saviours --- "

Answer: From the enslaving force of Rome

Carlotta sings this. Unfortunately, hers is the first singing voice we hear in the main body of the musical (Raoul sings in the auction scene).
2. Fill in where I've put dashes: 'You're really not a bit the --- girl that once you were"

Answer: gawkish

Raoul sings this while Christine sings "Think of Me." I think it's rather mean of him to call her gawkish, considering they were childhood sweethearts.
3. What is Little Lotte fonder of? "Little Lotte let her mind wander...Little Lotte thought: Am I fonder of --- "

Answer: dolls or of goblins or shoes

All the wrong choices are sung later in the Little Lotte tune except 'goblins or of chocolates or of shoes', which is in the wrong order to confuse you.
4. What is Raoul being called? "---, this slave of fashion, basking in your glory! ---, this brave young suitor, sharing in my triumph!"

Answer: Insolent boy, Ignorant fool

This is the part when the Phantom is mad at Christine and her 'friend,' Raoul. As always, the Phantom believes Christine is HIS. Despite his insanity and extreme possessiveness, many people adore him.
5. Who is the Phantom addressing? "---, you shall know me, see why in shadow I hide. Look at your face in the mirror, I am there, inside!"

Answer: Flattering child

This is one of my favorite parts, when the Phantom decides to reveal himself to Christine. I've always wondered what possessed him to reveal that he was not the angel Christine believed him to be.
6. Perhaps you know what fills in those dashes? "I have brought you to --- to this kingdom where all must pay homage to music, music."

Answer: the seat of sweet music's throne

In a review for the movie in 'The New Yorker,' the author said that 'sweet music's throne' sounded like a glorified name for the toilet, something which cracked me up! On a more serious note, this is sung before "Music of the Night."
7. What lovely names does the Phantom call Christine? "Damn you! You little prying ---, you little ---, is this what you wanted to see? Curse you! You little lying ---, you little ---, now you cannot ever be free! Damn you! Curse you!"

Answer: Pandora, demon, Delilah, viper

In the movie, Gerard Butler manages to have his voice go slightly Scottish accented in his anger when he yells this. I find this interesting as he had done so well at switching to a seemingly American or British accent from his usual Scottish accent. (I'm not exactly sure which.) This is the snippet that the Phantom yells after Christine has removed his mask for the first time and we have not actually seen the Phantom's face yet.
8. What fills in those poor, empty dashes? "I gave you my music, made your song take wing, and now how you've --- me, --- me, and --- me. He was bound to love you when he heard you sing."

Answer: repaid, denied, betrayed

This is the part when the Phantom has listened to all of "All I Ask of You" and feels betrayed by Christine, as he seems to be unaware that she may not have feelings for him.
9. What are the wrong companions? "---, cold and monumental, seem, for you, the wrong companions. You were warm and gentle."

Answer: Passing bells and sculpted angels

Christine decides to sing her grief in a very sad song to her father's grave. She also may be terribly confused by the Phantom and Raoul and her feelings towards each. I find the scene in the movie a little tedious, as it appears to be an attempt to show off Christine's beauty.
10. What about this face? "This face --- "

Answer: Which earned a mother's fear and loathing

This part is possibly the most depressing part in the entire musical. The Phantom is bemoaning the fact his own mother rejected him at birth.
