Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From which show finale do these lyrics come? "May I return to the beginning The light is dimming, the dream is too The world and I, we are still waiting Still hesitating, any dream will do"

Answer: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

This is sung by the full company in "Finale: Any Dream Will Do/Give Me My Coloured Coat."

This song is literally 'returning to the beginning'. The show opens with the narrator trying to encourage people to dream and thus begins to tell the story of Joseph - the dreamer.

In larger productions, the last song is called "Joseph Megamix," but this was written as an encore. It is not part of the original show.
2. Which musical's final song do these lyrics come from? "You have a right to go, But you should also know That I won't be alone for long. Long days with nothing said Are not what lie ahead -- I'm sorry, but I'm not that strong."

Answer: Aspects of Love

This is from "Anything But Lonely" by Rose Vibert.

This is sung to Alex as he is about to leave.

George (Rose's husband) has died - the day prior to this was his funeral.

Alex (George's nephew) and Giulietta (George's mistress) have just spent the night together.

Alex has just broken young Jenny's (George's and Rose's daughter) heart by telling her he is to old for her.

Rose interrupts to make her final play for Alex in this song (Rose and Alex began the show as lovers.)

Confused yet?
3. These lyrics are from a reprise at the end of which show? "So try and stem the tide, then you'll raise a banner Send a flare up in the sky, try to burn a torch And try to build a bonfire Every signal that you send, until the very end, I'm there"

Answer: Whistle Down the Wind

From "Whistle Down The Wind (Reprise)." Sung by Boone, Swallow, Brat & Poor Baby.

The mob have just been at the barn searching for the escaped criminal. He sets the barn on fire rather than surrender.

In the aftermath of the fire there is no sign of him. The family stand together in what remains of the barn.

Swallow remembers her mother telling her about the light in the darkness, Brat remembers how he prayed for a Christmas bonfire, and Boone is just happy all his children are safe.
4. What musical's last song do these lines appear in? "When he scorned me I Knew he'd have to die, Let me kiss his severed head. Compromise or death, He fought to his last breath"

Answer: Sunset Boulevard

Sung by Norma Desmond in "The Final Scene."

Norma has just killed Joe and descended into insanity. She thinks the police and reporters are her fans and that she is playing a part in her play "Salome."

Just after this she delivers her infamous line "...And now, Mr. De Mille, I am ready for my close-up."
5. The singer is explaining his or her choice in this final song of what musical? "Remember I was very young then And a year was forever and a day So what use could fifty, sixty, seventy be? I saw the lights and I was on my way"

Answer: Evita

Sung by Eva, on her deathbed, during "Lament."

Eva's last plea for forgiveness and understanding, trying to explain why she chose fame over a long life.

The next two lines sum it up perfectly:

"And how I lived! How they shone!
But how soon the lights were gone!"

I have a fridge magnet with a similar theme: "I'd rather live one day as a tiger than a thousand as a sheep". Personally I think sheep have quite peaceful lives.
6. Which musical raises this question in its last song? "There are dark days ahead When the power goes dead When the oil runs dry What can we try?"

Answer: Starlight Express

Poppa sings this in "Light At The End Of The Tunnel."

This is another show that actually finishes with a megamix.

Our hero Rusty, the little steam train, has just won the race. Poppa tells Greaseball, the diesel train, that he could be converted to steam and thus be under his own control.

Very environmentally correct song here.

"Diesel is for unbelievers
Electricity is wrong
Steam has got the power that will pull us along"
7. These lyrics are from the final song of which musical? "I will strive for peace with all my might That's what's right All kinds of love bring us together Causes the broken hearts to mend People must love, now and forever There's only one love in the end"

Answer: The Beautiful Game

Mary's lyrics in "Finale."

This musical begins with a football practice in Ireland. The team is made up of both Catholic and Protestant players and the show is full of religious and political violence.

John is one of the original players and is then a man of peace. He and Mary marry, but by the time their son Sean is born, John is in prison for assisting a teammate in escaping the law.

On his release, he kills another teammate and leaves for England to join the IRA.

This song is set 10 years later when Sean is going to football practice and Mary hopes that his team will have a better life than his father's.
8. Which musical has these lines in its finale? "You must find it in your heart to overlook what we've done and make another start once again as we were if not for me, for her"

Answer: The Woman in White

Marion sings this to Walter in "Finale."

Marion and Walter had been becoming closer during their search for Anne Catherick, when they believed Laura to be dead.

Upon finding out that it was Anne who had died and Laura who was still alive, Marion encourages Walter to forget all that has happened and go back to Laura.
9. This realisation comes at the end of which musical? "It's not the end of the world, nothing like it. Someone's there and I'll find where. It's not the end of the world to be free. It's not the end of the world - wait and see"

Answer: Tell Me on a Sunday

Sung in "Let Me Finish (Finale)." This is the original production, not the 2003 rewrite.

Our unnamed British girl travels to New York and L.A., trying desperately to find love but always being left.

This final song is where she actually leaves someone and finally realises she doesn't need a man to make her happy.
10. What musical features this stanza in its last song? "Pitiful creature of darkness . . . What kind of life have you known . . .? God give me courage to show you you are not alone ..."

Answer: The Phantom of the Opera

An outstanding finish for any ALW fan: Christine singing in "Beyond The Lake."

These famous lines precede Christine kissing the Phantom and, ultimately, lead to freedom for her and Raoul.
