Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the operetta, what flowers are the contadine singing to?

Answer: Roses

'List and learn, ye dainty roses, roses white and roses red!'
They sing of their love for Marco and Giuseppe, and later present the roses to them.
2. The wonderful duet, 'We're Called Gondolieri', is sung by which two of the gondoliers?

Answer: Marco and Giuseppe

Marco and Giuseppe sing this wonderful duet, but Antonio, Giorgio, Francesco and Annibale are also gondoliers, and Luiz is also a character in the operetta.
3. How do Marco and Giuseppe choose their brides?

Answer: They catch them in a game of blind man's buff

They can't decide, 'as all are young and fair, and amiable besides', so they 'propose to let impartial fate select for us a mate', singing 'These handkerchiefs upon our eyes be good enough to bind, and take good care that both of us are absolutely blind! Then turn us round and we with all convenient dispatch, will undertake to marry any two of you we catch.'
4. Who do Marco and Giuseppe end up with?

Answer: Marco with Gianetta, Giuseppe with Tessa

Tessa and Gianetta are the lucky two, and Tessa marries Giuseppe while Gianetta marries Marco. But all the others are also characters in the operetta.
5. After the Gondoliers and Contadine leave the stage, four characters enter. What country are they from?

Answer: Spain

'From the sunny Spanish shore ...'
6. What secret does the Duke reveal to Casilda?

Answer: She was married as a baby

'When you were a prattling babe of six months old you were married by proxy to no less a personage than the infant son and heir of His Majesty the immeasurably wealthy King of Barataria!'
7. Who is Casilda in love with?

Answer: Luiz

She is madly in love with Luiz, the Duke's drummer, but was married as a baby to the King of Barataria. Of course, as this is a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, Luiz turns out to be the King of Barataria!
8. What instrument does Luiz play?

Answer: Drum

'And his Grace's private drum, to Venetia's shores have come!'
9. Don Alhambra informs Marco and Giuseppe that one of them is the king of an island nation (but he can't tell them which one it is). What is this island called?

Answer: Barataria

Of course, as it turns out, neither of them is actually the king - due to some baby-swapping several years ago, Luiz is.
10. At the start of Act 2, all the gondoliers are enjoying court life. But what is making Marco and Giuseppe miserable?

Answer: Their wives aren't with them

Don Alhambra knows that the king is married to Casilda, so he tells the gondoliers that they can't take their wives with them to Barataria. Of course, their wives get bored and come along anyway!
11. Marco sings a beautiful song in Act 2, called 'Take a Pair of Sparkling ...' - which body part?

Answer: eyes

It's a really lovely tenor song - one of my favorite songs in all of the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas.
12. Marco and Giuseppe are corrupted by their power as kings, establishing a totalitarian type of rule.

Answer: False

In fact, they redesign the Baratarian monarchy on Republican principles - 'All departments rank equally, and everybody is at the head of his department.' Consequently, the court contains, among others, a Lord High Drummer Boy, a Lord High Footman and a Lord High Cook.
13. When Tessa, Gianetta, and the other contadine arrive, Marco and Giuseppe decide that they should have a banquet and a dance to celebrate. What is the name of the dance which they do?

Answer: The Cachuca

Another wonderful song - 'Dance a Cachuca'. There is a gavotte later in the act, as well - 'I am a courtier grave and serious', as the Duke educates Marco and Giuseppe on proper etiquette.
14. Who reveals the true identity of the King of Barataria?

Answer: Inez, the King's nurse

She does not appear until the Act 2 Finale, when she reveals what everybody wants to hear ...
15. Who is the real King of Barataria?

Answer: Luiz

Inez reveals that in order to protect the King, she swapped him with her own son. This means that the man she has raised as her son is in fact the King - Luiz, the Duke's drummer. Since he and Casilda are in love, and the gondoliers are reunited with their wives, this means that the operetta ends happily for everybody.
