Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The song "When Jealous Torments Reach My Soul" is from which opera?

Answer: Yeomen of the Guard

This song is sung by Wilfred Shadbolt, the head jailer, when he is rejected by Phoebe.
2. "Fold Your Flapping Wings", a 'lost song' from "Iolanthe", was sung by whom?

Answer: Strephon

During rehersals for this opera, the opera and character "Iolanthe" were known as "Perola" to try to stop pirate performances. The names were not changed to "Iolanthe" until the final run at the Savoy.
3. "Henceforth All the Crimes" and "For Thirty-Five Years I've been Sober and Wary" are both lost songs from "Ruddigore".

Answer: True

Both of these songs were written for Robin Oakapple to sing in Act 2 before Despard and Margaret's duet. "For Thirty-Five Years" was the original song but was cut on opening night and replaced 11 days later with "Henchforth All the Crimes". This was cut in the 1920 revival. Both songs had the same opening recitative "Away Remorse".
4. "Though Men of Rank may Useless Seem", the 'lost song' from "Patience", was sung by whom?

Answer: The Duke

Only the accompaniment of this song survives, so tenors wanting to 'revive' this song have to work out a vocal line from the orchestral parts. My favourite version of this song is sung by Nick Sales on his album "A Tenor All Singers Above".
5. In the Premiere Performance of "Pirates Of Penzance" in Paignton, Mabel had another aria in Act 2.

Answer: True

The first line of this aria was "When Conquering William's Legions Come." The premiere performance at Paignton was the only occasion this aria was performed.
6. Which song was, famously, cut from "The Mikado" during the dress rehearsal and only put back into the opera at the very last minute?

Answer: A More Humane Mikado

This song was only kept in after the D'Oyly Carte chorus apealed to Gilbert.
7. In "Yeomen of the Guard" what is the title of Sergeant Meryll's lost song?

Answer: A Laughing Boy but Yesterday

"When at My Leanard's Deeds Sublime" is the second verse of this song.
"When Jealous Torments" is a lost song for Wilfred Shadbolt. "When Our Gallant Norman Foes" is sung by Dame Carruthers.
8. There are no 'lost songs' from "HMS Pinafore".

Answer: False

Captain Corcoran had the song "Reflect, My Child" in act one but it was never performed.
9. Which two characters from "The Gondoliers" were originally meant to have arias in Act 1?

Answer: The Duchess and Luiz

The Duchess' aria, that was to follow "From The Sunny Spanish Shore", was never performed. Luiz's aria "The Wintry Scorn I Dearly Prize" was sung in early performances before being replaced by the duet "Ah, Well-Beloved".
10. Which opera has the most known cut songs?

Answer: Iolanthe

"Iolanthe" has at least four cut songs and many alternative versions of remaining songs in Gilbert's origional libretto.
