Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the prologue, we meet Walter Hartright, a drawing master, on his way to Limmeridge House in Cumberland. He meets the Signal Man at the station, who tells him he had a vision. What was this vision?

Answer: a stranger, who looked like Walter, told him that in one year's time, someone would die on the railroad tracks

"When a year to this day the dead lie on the tracks!" Walter doesn't really believe the signal man. However, the man's vision will turn out to be very true at the end of the show.
2. Immediately after his encounter with the signal man, Walter meets the "Woman in White," Anne Catherick. What are the first words she says to him?

Answer: "You've got to help me, there's someone after me!"

Anne is described as being "in her early 20's, fair, attractive, but her face is drawn and sorrowful. Her manner is wild and insistent." She implores Walter to help her, but then she hears someone coming and runs away. Walter, however, is getting curious, as Anne spoke of a secret that she must tell to someone.
3. Who is the first person Walter meets when he finally arrives at Limmeridge House?

Answer: Marian Halcombe

He excuses himself for being so late, but Marian doesn't mind. She extends a very hearty (and very wordy) welcome to Walter and introduces him to her uncle, Mr. Fairlie, and her half-sister Laura.
4. Whom does Laura Fairlie resemble - to Walter's great astonishment?

Answer: Anne

We later learn why.
5. The "drawing lessons" scene contains some funny moments: While Laura's drawing is quite good, Marian is rather untalented. Walter tries to encourage her and delivers the following lines: "You're improving, this is very moving, that's a cocker spaniel clear and true." What does Marian answer?

Answer: "Thank you for the compliment - I was sketching you!"

She then laughs, and the three of them reflect about the feelings that start to develop among them - Marian and Laura both fall in love with Walter, who fancies Laura.
6. In late summer, Walter and Laura finally understand their feelings for each other. They express it in the most famous song of the show. Which one?

Answer: I Believe My Heart

I understand the song was released as a single in Great Britain. It never made it to Germany, though.
7. Right after Laura and Walter confess their feelings, the villagers appear and celebrate "Lammastide" (harvest-time). Walter sees a little girl get scolded by her mother and asks what is wrong. What happened?

Answer: the girl thought she saw a ghost, and her mother didn't believe her

"A woman arl' in white." Walter thinks this must be Anne Catherick, and he is right. He and Anne meet for the second time.
8. During the second conversation between Walter and Anne, Anne reveals the name of the man she is so afraid of. Who is it?

Answer: Sir Percival Glyde

She doesn't say what he did to her, though. And hardly has Walter left Anne when he learns from Marian that Laura is engaged to be married - to Sir Percival Glyde....
9. Sir Percival Glyde and his friend Count Fosco arrive at Limmeridge House. What is so peculiar about Count Fosco?

Answer: he has a white mouse (and some other animals) which he takes everywhere he goes

Count Fosco, seemingly a charming, friendly, good-humored Italian gentleman, is very flirtatious towards Marian. He is Sir Percival's friend and will be his best man at the wedding with Laura.
In case you were wondering: the one who doubles all the sayings ("right-all-right," "heavens-good-heavens," etc.) is Professor Pesca, a friend of Walter's who doesn't appear in the musical.
10. In the evening, Walter confronts Sir Percival with the story of Anne Catherick and demands that he explain why Anne thinks of him as her tormentor. Sir Percival says that Anne was always a little strange, and that he put her in a private asylum to help her poor mother. Does Walter believe his story?

Answer: No

Marian tells Walter that it may be better if he left, and Walter does so.
11. Which traditional song is sung during the wedding ceremony of Laura and Sir Percival?

Answer: The Holly and the Ivy

This is a nice example of playing out a subtext: we hear the song through Laura's ears, and to her, everything seems distorted because she doesn't want to marry Sir Percival. It gives the whole scene a very eerie feeling and a slight touch of foreshadowing the bad surprises that await Laura. Anne Catherick tries to prevent the marriage, but she doesn't succeed.

Afterwards, though, Anne decides to help Laura: "So unlike me, you won't be friendless."
12. When Laura and Sir Percival return from their honeymoon, Laura tells Marian the truth about her husband: he only wants her money, and he beats her. Marian subsequently breaks into one of the highlight songs of the show. What is it called?

Answer: All For Laura

"I will live to right this wrong." Marian then meets Anne Catherick, who tells her to meet her the next day and to bring Laura. She wants to help. Then Fosco appears and takes Marian back into the house.
13. After Laura has successfully refused to sign a document for Sir Percival, she and Marian go to meet Anne Catherick. The three of them vow to help each other. Their plans are spoiled, however, as Sir Percival, Fosco, and a few others appear. What happens?

Answer: Anne is sedated and taken away

Anne threatens Sir Percival to tell her secret, and Sir Percival has Fosco sedate her and take her away. It is then that we learn, by the way, that Fosco is a doctor. The first act ends with Laura and Marian realizing that they are "powerless in the hands of these men." But Marian's fighting spirit won't let her accept her fate, and she decides to "right this wrong."
14. The beginning of the second act has Laura sing a short, but very beautiful song called "If I Could Only Dream This World Away." Then Marian appears and decides to eavesdrop on Glyde and Fosco. Due to a thunderstorm, though, she cannot hear everything. Which important info does she miss?

Answer: where the men plan to take Anne Catherick

Glyde: "What the devil do we do about Anne Catherick? Just the thought of her could drive this man to drink" - Fosco: "I've a most obscure location we can put her..." (the sound of thunder obscures what Fosco is saying) Fosco: "...perfect, don't you think?" - Glyde: "She'll be on my mind till she's out of sight" - Fosco: "She'll be locked away by the morning light." Marian then loses her footing, and Fosco, although he doesn't see her, concludes that she's been eavesdropping. Marian makes it to her room in time, but she is getting ill and has a nightmare. Due to the chaotic dream, she doesn't realize that the voice of Laura calling for help does not belong in it.
15. The next day, Fosco tells Marian Laura is dead. How does he say she died?

Answer: she was walking in her sleep and fell out of the window

Marian is convinced that they killed her. In case you thought the heart attack answer was correct: this is how Anne Catherick (as Laura) dies in the book.
16. After the funeral, Marian decides to go looking for Walter Hartright, who is meanwhile back in London. What is Walter doing when we first meet him there?

Answer: he is pawning the picture of Laura in order to forget

Walter is "not down and out, but close to it." He contemplates his life without Laura ("Evermore Without You") and sells the picture he painted of her at the pawnbroker's.
17. After some difficulties, Marian finds Walter in his lodgings. At first he is reluctant to listen, but Marian can persuade him to help her. What is the song she sings to him during that conversation?

Answer: If Not For Me For Her

"Can you find it in your heart to overlook what I've done and make another start? Once again, as we were, if not for me for her..." Walter finally throws his bottle of gin away and agrees to help Marian find Anne Catherick. There is no coda to "Evermore Without You."
18. Glyde, meanwhile, is gambling away the fruits of his success, causing Fosco to draw a closure and part with him. Marian decides to use her "feminine wiles" to get the information from Fosco. Where does she get the red dress she is wearing for her meeting with Fosco?

Answer: from Walter's neighbor, the prostitute

Marian borrows the red dress from the prostitute who lives above Walter. Walter's sister does not appear in the musical.
19. What is the showstopper song Fosco sings before Marian turns up at his place?

Answer: You Can Get Away With Anything

Fosco is packing, ready to leave London. He performs for his animals, bragging once again about his skills to get away with anything. Typically Lloyd Webber, this song is a clever parody of early belcanto opera.
20. During the "Seduction" scene, Marian comes to Fosco in order to obtain the information of where Fosco and Glyde hid Anne Catherick. Does she find what she is looking for?

Answer: Yes

She finds the document and reads that Anne has been in Cumberland all along. Fosco catches her red-handed, but lets her go. He tells her that she gave away the chance of her life and leaves.
21. Whom do Marian and Walter find in the asylum?

Answer: Laura Fairlie

Marian and Walter say they're representatives of Sir Percival Glyde and are here to see Anne Catherick. Marian wants to tell Walter about her feelings, but the nurse interrupts her. The woman they're being led to is not Anne Catherick, however - it is Laura Fairlie, who has been drugged and captured and kept in the asylum ever since, while Anne has been buried under Laura's name.
22. Walter and Marian ask Mr. Fairlie about Anne Catherick, but Fairlie only speaks when he learns that Laura is still alive. What does he reveal about Anne Catherick?

Answer: Anne is Laura's half-sister

"Your father loved the ladies - Anne's mother was a pretty one, and you can guess the rest..." Mr. Fairlie then tells them that Laura's estate already passed to Glyde, but Laura has an idea how to stop him.
23. To whom does Glyde talk at the railway station?

Answer: the Signal Man

The Signal Man, who told Walter Hartright about his eerie vision in the beginning of the show, is still having reports that "there is trouble on the line."
24. How does Laura make Glyde confess?

Answer: she pretends to be Anne's ghost

Laura pretends to be Anne's ghost (complete with Anne's accent) and says Glyde must confess, otherwise she'll haunt him for the rest of his life. Glyde tells her the whole story to her face.
25. What was the great secret Anne knew about Glyde?

Answer: Glyde made Anne pregnant, then killed the child and declared Anne insane

Glyde drowned Anne's child in Blackwater Lake (in contrast to the book, where the secret is that about Glyde's illegitimacy) and then declared her insane. Laura reveals herself, and Glyde tries to kill her, too. But Walter defends her, and in the course of the fight, Glyde is run over by the train.

Hence the vision of the Signal Man from the beginning came true. Laura and Walter confess their feelings to each other, while Marian stays behind and watches the stonemason chipping Anne's dates in the tombstone: Anne Catherick, 1839-1860. I hope you liked this quiz, and the show, of course. I have no idea whether it will come to Germany, too (as of 2005, not even "Whistle Down the Wind" has ever been performed here), so it's doubtful whether I'm ever going to see it live.

By the way, the book is worth a read, too.
