Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Daphne, a nymph who rejected advances of the god Apollo, was turned into what tree?

Answer: laurel

Daphne, who was a follower of the virgin goddess Artemis, rejected all suitors. The most insistent of them was Apollo, who chased her through the woods. Daphne asked her father, the river god Peneus, to transform her into a tree. The tree - laurel - became the sacred tree of Apollo.
2. Another nymph, trying to escape unwanted advances of Apollo, was also changed into a tree. What was her name?

Answer: Acantha

Apollo actually tried to rape Acantha. As she defended herself, she scratched his face. That's why acanthus - the tree she was transformed into - is "sun-loving" but thorny.
3. Yet another nymph, Pitys, was pursued by a god. In order to get away from him, the nymph changed into a pine tree. What was the name of the god who chased her?

Answer: Pan

Another version of this myth says that two gods: Pan and Boreas fought over her. When she chose Pan, the goat-god, Boreas, the god of the North wind, threw her against a rock, killing her instantly. The earth goddess Gaea transformed Pitys into the pine tree. The Greek word "pitys" means pine.
4. Myrrha, the daughter of a king, tried to escape her enraged father and was turned into a myrrh tree. From this tree sprang a beautiful boy - what was he called?

Answer: Adonis

Myrrha, under the cover of darkness, had an incestuous relationship with her father Theias, the king of Smyrna. When he discovered it, he wanted to kill her. But Myrrha managed to escape and the goddess Aphrodite turned her into a myrrh tree.
5. What was the name of a youth who was so sad at the death of his favourite stag, that he asked the god Apollo to transform him into a tree?

Answer: Cyparissus

Cyparissus was Apollo's lover. He killed his beloved deer, a gift from Apollo, by accident. The cypress tree, into which he was changed, became associated with mourning and burial.
6. The story of this nymph had nothing to do with unrequited love. She just wanted to pick flowers of a lotus tree. But the tree started to bleed and its blood turned her into a black poplar tree. What was the name of the nymph?

Answer: Dryope

Dryope was the daughter of Eurytus and Iole's half-sister. The lotus tree that caused her death was actually the nymph Lotis who was changed into it, when running away from Priapus. The tree was named after her.
7. Demophon, Theseus' son, married Phyllis, the daughter of a Thracian king. When he left for Athens and didn't come back for a long time, Phyllis took her life. The gods transformed her into what tree?

Answer: almond

Demophon was delayed, but eventually returned - too late, alas. The almond tree symbolizes love and fidelity in the Greek mythology.
8. Attis, a handsome young man, was loved by a goddess. Unaware of her feelings for him, he got engaged to a mortal woman. The jealous goddess drove him mad, forcing him to castrate himself. He bled to death and was changed into a pine tree. What was the name of the cruel goddess?

Answer: Cybele

Cybele was known as the Mother goddess and her cult originated in Asia Minor. She was worshipped with orgiastic rituals and ecstatic dances. Her priests castrated themselves in her honour.
9. A Persian princess had a love affair with the god Helios. When her father found out about it, he buried her alive. Helios turned her into the frankincense tree. What was her name?

Answer: Leucothoe

Leucothoe was the daughter of the king Orchamus. Helios, the god of sun, in order to gain access to her bedroom, disguised himself as her mother. A nymph Clytie, a former lover of Helios, was the one who reported the love affair to the king.
10. Philemon and Baucis, an elderly couple, wanted to remain together also in death. The gods fulfilled their wish and changed them into what trees?

Answer: oak and linden

Philemon and Baucis were the only ones who welcomed Zeus, wandering in disguise, to their house. As a reward, the god granted them their final wish.
