Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the main port of Lapland?

Answer: Trollesund

Lyra learns about witches, on the journey to Trollesund; witches are able to separate themselves from their daemons. When a person grows up, their daemon will settle as a fixed shape. Lyra says that will not happen with her and Pantalaimon. Farder Coram saved Serafina Pekkala, one of the heads of the witch clan, about forty years ago.
2. What do witches use for flying?

Answer: Cloud-pine

There are armoured bears in the North. Doctor Lanselius, the head of the witch council, advises Farder Coran to see Iorek Brynison, who has been exiled from the armoured bears. He also tells him, in private, that the witches have talked about Lyra for centuries. Lyra has a great destiny, only to be fulfilled elsewhere. Lyra meets Iorek.

His armour has been taken from him. If Lyra can get his armour back, he will be in her service forever.
3. What does Bolvangar mean?

Answer: Fields of evil

Lyra witnesses the Aurora in the sky for the first time. There are millions of worlds in the Aurora. Serafina Pekkala's daemon delivers a message to Farder Coram. The Dust-Hunters - or Gobblers - have set up a station in the North called Bolvanger. Lord Asriel is trying to build a bridge between two worlds and the Gobblers are trying to stop him. Lee Scoresby joins the rescue party.

He is an aeronaut, and has a hot air balloon. He knows Iorek Brynison well. Lyra manages to help the bear get his armour back.

A bear's armour is its soul.
4. Where is the "ghost" hidden?

Answer: Fish-house

Lyra says that the alethiometer has told her that the village next to Bolvanger is troubled by a ghost. She wants to help, so she persuades John Faa to allow her to go to the village with Iorek Brynison. The "ghost" is a little boy, but he is a severed child. The Gobblers have cut away his daemon. His name is Tony Makrios.
5. Where is ground gas usually found?

Answer: Fire-mine

Lyra takes Tony back to the gyptians. Tony misses his daemon, Ratter, a lot. In the night, Tony dies; he missed his daemon too much. Lyra buries Tony with a gold coin, with his daemon's name engraved on it, like the Jordan scholars. Iorek makes a secure tin box for the spy-fly.
6. What does Lyra say her father is, when she is held captive at Bolvanger?

Answer: Trader

On their way to Bolvanger, the gyptians are attacked. Lyra is taken to Bolvanger. Lyra uses the name Lizzie Brooks and pretends to be not very bright. Everyone seems very kind at Bolvanger. A nurse says it is called the Experimental Station. The other children there say that the nurses and doctors measure them, as well as their daemons. Mrs Coulter often comes to Bolvanger. Sometimes children are taken away from Bolvanger and never seen again.
7. How does Mrs Coulter arrive at Bolvanger?

Answer: By zeppelin

Lyra finds Roger and Billy Costa. She finds out exactly how a daemon is separated from a child. Roger shows Lyra a hiding place in the ceiling. Sometimes there is a fire-drill and everyone has to assemble outside.
8. Whose daemon helps Lyra free other daemons at Bolvanger?

Answer: Serafina Pekkala's

The people at Bolvanger measure for Dust too. During a fire-drill Lyra frees the daemons that have been separated from their owners. Mrs Coulter arrives during the fire-drill, which is not very well organised...
9. What is the guillotine blade made of?

Answer: Manganese and titanium alloy

Lyra overhears Mrs Coulter talking with the Doctors. They have invented a new separator, to separate a child from its daemon. Lyra is caught and comes face to face with Mrs Coulter again.
10. During the escape from Bolvanger, what do the children throw at the Tartars?

Answer: Snow

Lyra is determined to pretend and lie to Mrs Coulter. When Mrs Coulter asks for the alethiometer. Lyra gives her the tine with the spy-fly instead. During the confusion, Lyra escapes and sets off the fire-alarm. The witches help the children of Bolvanger get to Iorek and the gyptians. Lyra meets Serafina Pekkala. They sail away in Lee Scoresby's balloon.
