1. The story starts with Dortmunder doing what he does best (or worst), breaking in. Where?

Answer: A camera shop

Dortmunder has broken in, selected his loot, and set off an alarm. He escapes by pretending to be a customer who fell asleep in the optician's, and was locked in.

2. His friend, Andy Kelp, arrives next morning with another job. This involves:-

Answer: robbing a grave

Three people want Kelp to swap a coffin stolen from out West with one in the cemetery in Queens.

3. When John and Andy complete the swap, what do Fitzroy and Irwin plan to do?

Answer: kill them

The guys notice a car following them on the way to the cemetery. When they stop on a bridge afterward, John relieves Fitzroy of his gun (and wallet) and they leave Fitzroy and Irwin stranded.

4. When the gang meets the trio, they discover that the body is related to Little Feather. How?

Answer: her grandfather

The body taken out is a member of an upstate New York tribe, with no known living survivors. If Little Feather proves relationship, she becomes entitled to a one third share in a casino.

5. Of which tribe is Little Feather claiming membership?

Answer: Potteknobbee

The body taken from the grave was actually Pottaknobbee. The Oshkawa and the Kiota run the casino jointly. The Choctaw is Little Feather's actual tribal background (and that of the new body in the grave, of course).

6. Fitzroy and Irwin are waiting for Little Feather at the supermarket. She doesn't turn up. Why?

Answer: She is arrested.

Dortmunder and the guys see her being arrested on the evening news. It seems the casino co-managers have something to hide, don't want to deal with her claim, and have her arrested for fraud.

7. Little Feather and her lawyer meet with the co-manager and his lawyer in judge's chambers to discuss the case. What does the judge decide?

Answer: To test the body for DNA.

Having refused a $200 000 offer to 'go away', this is just what Little Feather wanted. The idea had to come from somebody else, however.

8. Benny, Roger's nephew follows Little Feather when she gets out of jail. Whom does he see her meet?

Answer: No-one

Little Feather would take taxis from and to her mobile home, being very careful not to be seen with any of the others.

9. How does the gang decide to prevent Roger and Frank from changing the bodies (again)?

Answer: They exchange headstones with another body.

Tiny actually comes up with this idea, and they duly do it. Then Benny and two cousins attempt the switch back, only to be caught by police.

10. Dortmunder (Diddums) comes up with a way around the guarded gravesite. What?

Answer: Match DNA between Little Feather and the grave's present occupant.

The problem with this is that they need hair from the last descendants of Moody (corpse). These descendants are closely guarded. Dortmunder is happy because this is something he can contribute.

11. The gang recruits another driver who sometimes works with them. Who is this?

Answer: Stan

Stan Murch is a regular gang member who drives. Anne Marie is Stan's girlfriend. Rollo is the bartender where the gang meets. May is Dortmunder's girlfriend.

12. Murch and Andy fly to Cleveland to steal a vehicle. What kind?

Answer: snow plow

The plan is to take advantage of an approaching snowstorm to cut the power and smuggle Murch's mum into the mansion. While the guys help themselves to some of the treasures, Murch's mum befriends the mother and daughters and steals the required hair.

13. What happens to Fitzroy and Irwin at the end?

Answer: End up in jail

They plan to kill the gang but are out-smarted. Both are sent to the West coast on transporters. Fitzroy is arrested and jailed on outstanding warrants. Irwin gets a job as a teacher, but is later caught with a fifteen year-old girl.

14. What happens to Frank and Roger at the end?

Answer: Frank goes to jail.. Roger flees the country.

Frank tries to burn the books and ends up burning down the casino. Roger cleans out all the accounts and skips the country.

15. Who does Little Feather finish up with at the end?

Answer: Benny Whitefish

Benny's wildest dreams come true. Hudge Higbee, glad the case is over, goes home to swim. Tommy Dog, on behalf of the Tribal Council, welcomes Little Feather. Marjorie carries on her normal life. (What? Dortmunder is a family series)
